Thanks, Lyn. The importance of diuretics as well as plenty of
water drunk is a large factor in my condition, indeed. I'm
feeling off colour today due to my insomnia, which dominated
most of the night.
My chief concern over the weeping leg is dressings strong enough
to contain the seepage. I have compression socks from use with
ulcers on my left leg (I have the unused right components) and
I'll try that with a thick dressing beneath. I hope that will
work as there are few alternatives. I'm still trying to come to
terms with the condition probably being permanent, not a happy
thought.

It may not be permanent if you take very good care of yourself
from now on, Greg.
Over here, you can have blood tests taken at some local
pharmacies - Boots, Lloyds and others. You can also buy,
online, strips to test urine for various things. I expect you
know that already and, of course, not everyone wants to know.
Ever since I had covid and was in hospital, I have had blood
tests taken by a Community nurse who comes to my house. I
didn't ask for that service but was glad to find out a couple or
three tests ago that I was deficient in B12 and folate, which I
rectified and both are currently fine; as a result, my
peripheral neuropathy is much improved, I only get a few twinges
in the evening now. As I said before, my most recent blood test
showed my cholesterol was up a bit and I've been more careful
with diet ever since but it wasn't that high and always goes up
as we age. I know I am not diabetic as had already tested for
that. I'm just saying, not recommending.
PS: Roser may have an opinion which needs to be taken into
consideration, Greg, If you can reassure her that will help.

Sorry to hear of your health woes Greg, I can understand your
insomnia as I also suffered from a too active mind when I can’t
sleep.
For the last few years I have been in agony with my back and
especially at night I would wake up with a toothache like pain
in my lower back, herindoors fed up of me complaining persuaded
to seek advice, after a consultation and 2 MRI’s I was diagnosed
with serious damage to L3, L4 and L5, I had two epidurals and
nothing worked, painkillers only added to my misery by keeping
me awake; or I would wake up after 2 hours or so and the pain
would be back.
Anyway, the consultant advised me to have surgery and when asked
if that would help with the pain he said a good result is about
60/40 with over 60% of patients experiencing complete pain free,
his advice for epidurals was about 50/50 success and they didn’t
work for me so I was wary of his expertness and his
consultations are € 295.00 a pop, Epidurals € 675 each and
operations running at about € 12,000 and there might be extra
costs depending on my recovery rate and time in their clinic.
And I do not have health insurance.
Anyway I met one of the consultant physiotherapists provided by
the clinic who just happened to be from my old hometown in Mayo,
a much clued in individual who understood my issues and advised
me against surgery or only as a last resort, from our first
consultation and starting off with gentle exercises, progressing
onto specialised directed exercises to build my lower back
muscles and others to increase my overall fitness, I am now pain
free at night and am starting to replace fat with muscle and
loosing few kilo’s, for the first time in a good few years I am
starting to feel like your average human.
Anyway enough about me and back to your symptoms Greg, I cannot
offer you prayers but I can empathise, I do not know enough
about Oedema to be of much help, but since I have given up
eating lots of bread and cheese and changing my breakfast meal
from muesli granola and porridge etc. to tomatoes and tinned
fillets of Mackerel a banana, and an orange with a protein
yogurt and every few days two boiled eggs, I am feeling 100%
better and my stomach feels 100% better I have less pain in my
hands and knees, and I still have my single malt and a glass or
two of wine of an evening .
My advice to you is change your eating habit, cut our
carbohydrates, eat more fish and bright coloured fruit and
vegetables, talk with a specialist to get proper advise on what
is causing your symptoms and what changes you might have to make
to remedy your issues.
Maybe one of the online medical specialists would be of benefit
to you, I am sure they are in Spain also; but here is a link to
Ireland Doctor Online

I too have had health problems over the years starting at birth
over 90 years ago, but nothing like Greg is suffering: I can
offer him only empathy, and prayers.
I was suffering from Patent ductus arteriosis at birth which not
detected until I completed army training at Catterick Camp. I
did a 6 mile run with the rest of the National servicemen and
after about 5 months they discovered my congenital defect of the
heart and I was shipped off to hospital.
I had an operation for it under Mr.Alison* of Leeds General
Infirmary . In Canada I have a hiatus hernia. Diet helps there.
In 2006 I had a triple bypass although I did not have a heart
attack. Since then about five years ago I had two stents put in
near my heart. I can walk, and climb steps inside our home and
use a walking stick when outside.
This year I gave up weight training and the exercise bike
downstairs in the basement along with the weights which I have
had since just before I got married.
I substituted light ecercises and some Yoga.
I am not getting any worse I can say that, and there is some
slight improvement in my walking ability.
* Mr. Alison became Nuffield Professor of Surgery at Oxford
University some years later according to a letter from my late
mother.

You'll outlive us all, Leslie. I remember, years ago when you
told us, how appalled I was that the army did not detect your
heart problem. That was scandalous.
However, we are not in competition with each other on here.
Greg's is the most recent and acute problem.
There are soft pads you can buy, Greg, to go over your leg leak
and fix around the edges with something like masking tape. They
are not tight and are disposable, you can change them a couple
of times a day or more if you need. I hope you are now asleep
with your legs raised, a glass of water on your bedside table.
May this day be a better one for all of us, please God. Amen.

I have such pads, Lyn, which have an adhesive border around the
absorbent part. I'm wearing one with a compression sock (or
stocking) from my leg ulcer days which goes above the knee and
keeps the pad in place as well as forming pressure on the leak
point to control the amount of leakage. As for your message, I'm
afraid it didn't find me awake having woken early again, yet
still feeling dog tired. When I sought to sleep again with my
head lolling forward as I sat in my armchair (lying face down on
the bed makes it worse), I was rudely awakened each time with a
jolt and a sensation of panic, extremely unpleasant. You want to
sleep but your body (nervous system?) won't let you. Only later
after some breakfast could I manage a nap. Awful.

Greg, I’m very worried about your symptoms and have half a mind
to fly out to Barcelona. In the UK we can phone 111 for NHS
information & advice. Have you anything similar in Barcelona? Do
doctors do home visits?

Re: Health worries

Please don't worry about my symptoms, Gwinnie. I have the
leaking leg under control and apart from a general weariness due
to lack of sleep, I don't feel anything alarming. The humidity
levels here in Barcelona have been particularly high of late
(around 90% in the night when the comfort norm is around 60%.)
It affects me considerably, more than most people, and I wake up
in the night feeling clammy and constricted with difficulty
getting back to sleep (I'm a light sleeper anyway). Nothing I
can do about it, unfortunately.
I've had a private insurance policy for years now and they do
home visits (I had one once.) Don't worry; I'll use that service
again should the need arise.

Praying here, Greg. Really sorry to hear you’re suffering like
this. On the insomnia, Andrew Huberman, a neurobiologist out of
Stanford, has an excellent video on YouTube on insomnia and how
to treat it yourself. It’s fascinating and so useful.
I want to echo the others and urge you to at least have the leg
looked after. I know here, one can go to a walk-in clinic and be
seen.
🙏🙏🙏

Thanks Bev. I've looked at the Huberman video and some others by
him and other experts in the field. In fact, there are enough to
keep you up all night! :D
Not seen Lyn for a couple of days. Hope everything's okay.
