Health worries
By: Gregory Date: March 7, 2024, 5:19 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Since new year I've experienced various problems after being in
reasonable health for my age. It began with insomnia, sometimes
almost all night awake (high humidity in the air here, often
90%, doesn't help) which has left me feeling exhausted without
hardly moving. I try to make up for lost sleep during the day
but I'm not good at just bringing on sleep automatically, not
least due to an over-active imagination. Then, a cold came on
last week whose aftermath I'm still coping with and then to cap
it all, at the weekend fluid started leaking from a point in my
right calf due (according to Internet) to a build-up in fluid on
the part of inactive OAP's like myself. This latter is very
messy and stains trousers, socks and shoes. I'm a fairly stoical
fellow but there's a limit to one's capacity to live with such
things. Quality of life and all that.
Please pray for me, friends. (And any advice, tips, etc.
welcome.)

I trust you've seen your Doctor -- what does she or he say?

Greg, I am so sorry. Please do seek medical advice promptly,
including comprehensive blood tests; make sure they test for
everything, liver and kidney functions, B12 and folate, as well
as the routine tests. The fluid leaking from your calf could be
anything, something minor or serious, but needs immediate
medical attention. You really must give up drinking alcohol (I
know you cut it down at one point), drink water, drastically
reduce salt and give up bananas (if you usually eat them), until
you have a diagnosis. Apart from that, no advice from me, I'm
not qualified to give it. However, I will add you to my
prayers, starting right now.

I hope you have made an appointment with your doctor, Greg, and
will see her or him very soon. Please give us updates. In the
meantime, prayers are with you.

Actually, Lyn, I haven't. It's a bit complicated but for
starters I don't have a doctor per se, only access to a Social
Security doctor and I haven't visited one for years now. I have
private insurance which I've used used for my various lower back
and other pains, but my last visit to a specialist was ten years
ago. That's to say no medical attention for a decade,
fortunately not having had serious health problems in the
meantime.
Arranging a visit now would initially mean the GP first for a
general assessment followed by visits to centres for blood
tests, etc. and then other appointments depending on the
results. Then there's my relatively limited mobility due to
arthritis (crutch and walking stick) plus the inconvenience of
increasingly wet trousers, etc en route to each place. Then, if
the causes are serious (not that I sense such now), more
appointments and treatment, etc. etc. Frankly Lyn, I just
couldn't be bothered with all that rigmarole after a quiet life
of some years. I'd rather take my chances on its being a minor,
manageable problem (I'm fine playing the home recluse; plenty to
occupy my time here.) And if not, well at 76 I've had a good
innings and couldn't complain if the shutters came down, just so
long as it would be swift and pain free. And given the
increasingly bad state of this old world...well, you get my
drift.
Thanks for your interest and advice anyway, much appreciated.
I'll keep you posted anyway on anything new here.

I understand you perfectly, Greg, and feel much the same myself
(even more so since my hospitalisation a couple of years or so
ago). You can find lots of information online from good sites,
by which I mean proper medical ones, adjust your diet, and
supplements if necessary, drink plenty of water and try to get a
bit more exercise.
All the very best.

I disagree, a full MOT is exactly what’s needed. Also, I know
that’s exactly the advice you’d give me if it was me talking
about a health worry.
We use social security doctors too here in the UK, for as long
as there is the NHS. You worked hard and contributed to the
system all your working life. This is exactly what the system is
designed for x
