From my same note book as formerly I discover that Ephemeris
time which is a constant was devised by astronomers to be so in
1955.
Back in 1851 John Foucault devised a method of proving that
earth was rotating and a second proof is that our earth is an
oblate spheroid.
Over 2000 years the rotation of the earth is .02 seconds longer
than it used to be. It is slowing down.
Here is another piece of forgotten knowledge by the average man.
Doppler's Principle is:
The change in wavelength divided by normal wavelength is equal
relative to the observer's object, divided by the speed of
light.
Then our professor Miss Northcott delves into the complexities
of Vernal Equinox and sidereal time and Kepler's Law.
We had as an exercise to draw the celestial sphere from an
observer at 44N. Label the celestial meridian , horizon, equator
cardinal points on horizon when VE is at West point.
Mark the position of the earth . at equinoxes and solstices
.Tabulate the RA and Dec for each of these dates. Mark the
position of the star at RA of 9hours Dec at 45 degrees.
Estimate its altitude etc.
A very good course in astronomy it was indeed. Miss Northcott
was researcher at the Dunlap Observatory.,on Spectral Lines.

I still think it amazing Greg that they achieved so much using
logarithms to calculate, and slide rules, and telescopes instead
of computers and calculators that we have today.

I was reading while up north in Cardiff and noted that many
recent physicists and other scientists were atheists and later
because of scientific evidence changed their minds. There are
many reasons for this change of heart. All of them scientific.
For example Georges Lemaitre showed mathematically that field
equations solutions he made agreed with those of of Friedman
(of course he already was a Catholic priest.) Einstein who
believed in a steady state universe said to him: Your
mathematics are excellent ,but your physics are abominable.Later
on Einstein believed in the Big Bang as British physicist Hoyle
once called it.
In 1965 two amusing physicists (to my mind) called Robert Wilson
and Arno Penzias were cleaning the Horn Antenna at Bell Labs
1965 of pigeon muck when they discovered cosmic background
radiation. They calculated that the universe had a beginning.
NASA launched a satellite known as the Cosmic Background
Explorer COBE which did show CMBR radiation.
George Smoot the COBE director said "If you are religious it is
like seeing God." He later won the Nobel Prize for his
discovery.
The reason scientists liked the steady state theory of the
universe is because it had no beginning and they need not worry
about God, a Creator.

Before I quit this subject. Here is something I didn't learn at
school. The four forces of nature which hold our planet
together,are gravitation, electromagnetism, strong Nuclear
force, weak nuclear force.
And of course scientists -or at least most of them do - that the
universe had a beginning. And that it is so finely tuned in
construction that a higher intelligence must have done it. They
proved this by observation and mathematics.
No longer do they believe in a steady state universe.
It is also carbon based. Of course there are scientists who
conceive of theories which do not agree with that -but there
always will be , however to my mind the verdict is in, it is
commonsense as the weight of evidence for it gets bigger and
bigger,

Fred Hoyle, 1915 - 2001 was a prominent British physicist who
coined the despicable term "The Big Bang" on BBC ( I believe)
to describe the creation of the universe. Some writings on the
internet say he was an atheist but fail to reveal his conversion
to believe in a super-intellect. Hoyle "The Universe"
A common sense interpretation of the facts suggests that a super
-intelligence has monkeyed with physics, ac well as with
chemistry and biology , and that there are no blind forces worth
speaking about in nature. The numbers one calculates from the
facts seems to me so overwhelming as to put this conclusion
almost beyond question. Fred Hoyle 1981.
