The First Crusade was a military campaign by western European
forces to recapture the city of Jerusalem and the Holy Land from
Muslim control. It was launched by Pope Urban II in 1095,
following an appeal from the Byzantine emperor Alexios I
Komnenos15. The Crusade was the first and the most successful of
many 'armed pilgrimages' to the Holy Land23. The Christian
       forces took control of Jerusalem.

My point was the Crusades spanned more than two centuries and
did not stop the spread of Islam. However, the crusaders
believed they would be redeemed by fighting. Propaganda at work
       there.

       That is news to me!

Oh yes, there was something fanatically holy about being a
crusader, they were considered to be 'holy warriors', fighting
for God and defending their faith. I remember learning about
that at school, I'd have thought you did too. There have also
been television programmes about the crusades, and hymns
written. The crusades were known as holy wars.

I never heard anything about the Crusades at school and no idea
what they were teaching about them.

We didn't do a great deal at school about the Crusades but, as
they went on for so very long, they came up in history lessons
fairly often, also in literature sometimes, plus what we read
       and saw on TV.

My reference source says there were seven crusades between 1095
       and 1291.

That's right. The best part of two centuries. It must have
seemed endless, just a part of life. From the World History
Encyclopaedia: "Rulers often granted estates to nobles in
return for a fixed quota of fighting men in times of war".
Britannica has a good section on the crusades too.

       Good Question Beverly.
The answers have been interesting too.
If, we remember psalm 139. It says before any of our days began
God knew us all and our days allotted to before they began.
People die the day they are suppose to. Israel is a place and a
people. They are under the first covenant and we the second and
final covenant. The one which is not like the covenant he made
when he lead the Israeli test out of Egypt with Moses.
This is a fallen world where bad things happen to good and bad
alike. God has told the end from the beginning. Faith, in God
leads me to trust everything to him. He has got this...my
       personal belief...><>

Yes but we must still try to do our best, to be as just and
merciful as possible. We don't know how long we will be around
and we owe it to others (& ourselves), to make an effort towards
a better society. Society is fairer now than ever before, at
least in this country and in some others, because people have
campaigned and striven to make it so. I have seen great positive
changes in my 74 years though nothing is perfect. I believe God
wants us to keep on striving for a better world. He gave us life
on this planet for a reason, He sent His son Jesus to help and
guide us to make iife better.
