[*]Steve (KW0Z): Complimented the Net Controller on using
NetLogger to manage call signs and recommended it to all net
controllers listening.
Topic Discussion Highlights: "What was your first ham radio?"
[]KE2BJW: Started on EchoLink using a phone right after
getting licensed, then bought a $40 Baofeng dual-pack kit off
Amazon and programmed it for local repeaters.
[]N9GUN (Tom): Licensed in 1987. First rig was a used Yaesu
FT-101EE with tube finals and a vertical antenna hung off an
apartment balcony. Later acquired a Yaesu dual-band HT with a
car docking station.
[]K4WZV (Robert): Started with a Hallicrafters HC-100
receiver given to him by his uncle in high school because the
string-and-pulley tuning mechanism was broken. Fixing and tuning
it sparked his interest in amateur radio.
[]WB3GTM (Mike): Licensed in the mid-1970s. First 2-meter
rig was a Yaesu Memorizer upgraded with a Heathkit DTMF
microphone for auto-patching. Early CW rig was a tube-type
Gonset G76, followed by a Heathkit HW-101 built from a kit.
[]KW0Z (Steve): First experimental setup pre-licensing
around 1961 was a crystal set using a germanium/galena crystal,
later upgraded with a 1N34 diode, using a cold water pipe for an
antenna ground.
[]N9PMR (Rick): Restored an old mahogany console shortwave
receiver in his youth. First licensed HF rig was a Yaesu FT-200
(sold by Henry Radio as the Tempo-1). Shared a story about
setting up a 75m attic Z-dipole out of MIG welding wire and
75-ohm cable TV coax during a winter blizzard.
[]KF5MG: Started in the 1990s with RadioShack HTX 10-meter
equipment, an old Motorola UHF radio, and eventually upgraded to
ICOM rigs, including the ICOM IC-C1A.
[]KA7EII: Licensed in 1979 as a novice with a Henry Radio
Tempo-1 (Yaesu FT-200). Upgraded to General in 1980 and bought
an ICOM IC-2AT HT, later using a Yaesu FT-991A, FT-70, and
FT-5D.
[]N4HYK (Doc): Licensed in 1961. First setup consisted of a
Hallicrafters S-38 receiver (tuning via WWV) and a homebrew
40-watt 40-meter transmitter built from scrapped TV/radio parts
using a 6KD6 horizontal output tube.
[]N4MNN: First radio was a compact Kenwood 2-meter HT with
thumbwheel frequency selection on top, followed by a Drake TR-4
and a Yaesu FT-101EE.
