🪵 Discussion Topic: "Strange Noises in the Ham Shack"
[] Joe (WB3IHY): Spent an afternoon tracking down a faint,
persistent buzzing sound under his desk. After digging through
stacks of ham gear and storage boxes, he discovered it was a
3-year-old water-leak alarm running on nearly dead batteries.
Compounding the pain, the battery case was annoyingly secured by
four micro-screws.
[] Robert (K4WZV): Recalled an old setup where a faint
"beep, beep, beep" sounded off at exactly 3:00 PM every day. It
took months to locate due to shack acoustics: it was an old
digital LCD watch buried in a drawer with an active daily alarm.
[] Carrie (WC7V): Highlighted the infamous Russian
Woodpecker, an old Soviet over-the-horizon radar system that
plagued the 20-meter and 40-meter bands with sharp, rhythmic
tapping sounds back in the day.
[] Cliff (VE6PLC): Traced a pervasive hum from his shack
into the next room, ultimately pinning it to his home furnace.
The laminations on a 24-volt transformer had separated and were
loudly vibrating. A quick $40 replacement part solved it.
[] Kevin (N9LGO): Shared a great throwback from 40 years ago
on CB running a high-power Varmint 1000 linear amplifier; every
time he keyed up, his audio loudly blasted out of his kitchen
microwave. He also shared a story where his 2-meter mobile rig
accidentally triggered an automated car wash's sensors while
inside it, shutting the whole system down and trapping him until
attendants could hose his truck down manually.
[] W7VP: Swapped audio noises for a physical surprisea
4-foot King Snake came right up his concrete driveway trying to
sneak into the garage. Attempting to blast it back with a water
hose failed miserably when the snake started swimming directly
up the stream because it loved the water. It was eventually
moved safely across the road with a flat shovel.
[] Bruce (KC3JS): Remembered stringing up a 15/40-meter
dipole in the attic directly over his sister's bedroom as a new
ham. His RF bled so hard into her stereo system that it
broadcast his voice while the unit was turned off, convincing
her the room was haunted. He also noted a kitchen reverse
osmosis system that would automatically kick its pump on and
flood the floor whenever he transmitted on a specific band.
[] Robert (K4WZV): Added a closing story about an automatic
air freshener in his garage shack. Stray RF on 40-meter sideband
would trigger the device's circuitry, causing it to spray
continuously until the entire garage smelled heavily of air
freshener. He also used to freak out his son-in-law by
accidentally broadcasting muffled SSB audio over the house
security system speakers.
