Preamble
Welcome to the TGIF Radio Net for Friday, September 5th, 2025.
My name is Steve, KW0Z, filling in for Robert Bretzman, K4WZV,
the chief engineer behind the TGIF-DMR amateur radio network.
We meet every Friday at 8:30 p.m. Eastern in server talk group
31665
to discuss a chosen topic and anything related to amateur radio.
Tonight, we’ll talk about audio cables, net preparation, and any
topics you bring.
Emergency traffic may be indicated by triple break and accepted
anytime.
This is a directed net, so transmit only when directed by net
control.

has less “trading” than in the past, when hams often built or
modified their own gear. Encouraged those who still build and
experiment.[/td][/tr]
[tr][td]WX4BDP (Brandon)[/td][td]Announced his Raspberry Pi talk
group (ID 174) has been renamed to National Weather Relays while
keeping the same admins. Invited operators to use it for weather
events and relays.[/td][/tr]
[tr][td]KB1PZS (Robert)[/td][td]Shared his journey from CB to
ham radio, starting as a young scanner listener and tinkerer.
Recalled using his father’s Browning Golden Eagle and CB in the
’90s. Got licensed in 2008.[/td][/tr]
[tr][td]WB3IHY (Joe)[/td][td]Inspired by his brother to get
licensed, described ham radio as “magic” that let him talk
worldwide. A natural progression from interest in
electronics.[/td][/tr]
[tr][td]WE8M (David)[/td][td]First drawn in by his father’s
license in the 1970s. Started with CB in college, later became a
ham. Held NU8H for 30 years before taking his father’s call WE8M
in tribute.[/td][/tr]
[tr][td]NP4M (Noel)[/td][td]Began on CB during storms in Puerto
Rico with a Sears 23-channel radio. Later modified a Cobra 142
GTO for 10m and contacted Italy. Progressed from novice to
extra. Still active in CW and antenna building.[/td][/tr]
[tr][td]KB8KES (Michael)[/td][td]Recalled using a Mark III CB
with his miner father during shifts. Shared his CB callsign
KFX5561.[/td][/tr]
[tr][td]KC8USA (Fred)[/td][td]Talked about repairing old gear
like 8-tracks and VCRs. Said 75% of failures are worn belts,
advised using equipment regularly and storing spares in the
freezer.[/td][/tr]
[tr][td]KC3NRS (Jerry)[/td][td]Found a pristine Kenwood TS-520
in a farmhouse 38 years ago and still uses it. Started on CB,
later licensed, now teaches at a club.[/td][/tr]
