       why are there some gray and some or orange?

       If you click on where it says, "Click for Border Legend," it
       will tell you.
       But in summary:
       Grey means the hotspot is using a secured connection and is
       connected (authorized) on the server.
       Orange means that the hotspot is using a legacy (unsecure)
       connection.
       Blue means that the hotspot is in the process of connecting.
       Red means that the hotspot is disconnected.
