       Hello everyone,
I'm back to ham radio after a 15 year hiatus. Got my ticket 15
years ago and have never really done anything with it. Think I
was on the air maybe once or twice. Nerves maybe, I don't know,
but figured it was time to do something with it. And wow, how
       things have changed.
A few weeks ago I dusted off my icom t90a and started to monitor
the local repeaters. After a few days of hearing nothing I hit
up the forums at radio reference to see if there were any locals
that could shed some light. One ham came back and told me the
repeaters were like crickets. That's when I discovered digital
that led me down the road to dmr and tgif.
I researched till I was confused and ended up with the anytone
d878uv plus. I tried the local dmr tower but never heard
anything. The parrot tg never worked either. Contacted the local
club and was told to just key up on any talk group and I should
hear something, but I never did. To test my radio and code plug,
I built a mmdvm hotspot with pistar and bingo. With the hotspot
configured for brandmeister I was listening to the world. But I
heard good things about tgif and wanted to give it a shot. So I
configured the dmrgateway for both bm and tgif. Now I have the
best of both worlds. As easy as this came to me, I guess I was
       made for this digital stuff.
Anyway, long story longer, I still haven't had any QSO's on dmr
yet. Sort of just monitoring to get the feel of things. I have
tested with the parrot tg and had success on both bm and tgif. I
even got my hotspot setup mobile so I can use it during my short
commute. So maybe one day soon I'll get the nerve to shout out
and let the world know I'm here.
