A Guide To Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity
By: aristocrats Date: July 27, 2014, 10:43 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Sexuality are often confusing to teens. It's hard to tell
exactly what your sexual orientation is, especially in a society
filled with misconceptions and stereotypes. Hopefully, these
will answer your questions. All of these are written to include
genderqueer and nonbinary genders. (See below)
       Sexual Orientation
*includes but is not limited to
       Heterosexual/Straight
Someone who is heterosexual, or straight person, is someone who
is only/mostly attracted to the opposite gender. This person may
feel a small amount of attraction to the same gender, but maybe
not enough to consider themselves bisexual. Being straight may
include being attracted to genderqueer people who were assigned
the opposite gender of the person at birth.
       Homosexual/Gay/Lesbian
Someone who is homosexual, or gay person, or lesbian, is someone
who is only/mostly attracted to the same genders. This person
may feel a small amount of attraction towards the opposite
gender, but maybe not enough to consider themselves bisexual.
Gay people may be attracted to genderqueer people who were
assigned the same gender at birth.
       bisexual
Someone who is bisexual is attracted to two or more genders.
They may be attracted to both sexes equally, or they may prefer
       one or the other.
       Polysexual
Someone who is polysexual is attracted to many, but not
necessarily all genders. They may be attracted to all of these
genders equally, or they may prefer one or a few to anotehr.
       Pansexual
Someone who is pansexual is someone who is attracted to people
of all genders and sexual orientations.
Bisexual, polysexual, and pansexual are generally
       interchangeable terms.
       Asexual
Someone who is asexual feels little to no sexual desires. They
may be entirely asexual, or maybe under the grey-asexual
umbrella, someone who feels sexual attraction on occasion/under
certain circumstances, such as demisexuals, who feel sexual
attraction when a strong emotional bond has been formed. Asexual
people may still have romantic feelings and desire to date.
As well as asexual, people can be aromantic, meaning they feel
no romantic emotions. These people may feel sexual attraction,
however. People also can be both asexual and aromantic.
       Queer
Queer used to be a homophobic slur but it has been reclaimed and
thus now is considered a positive thing. Queer is an umbrella
term for "not straight" but can be a stand-alone orientation.
Anyone who isn't straight is queer by definition, whether or not
       it is their stand-alone orientation.
If I'm missing some, please let me know and I will edit the post
       to include them.
       Gender Identity
       *includes but not limited to
Sex and gender are two very different concepts. Sex is
biological (what organs you have) while gender is psychological.
The gender spectrum is a lot broader than just male or female.
       Cisgender
Someone who feels they are the gender they were assigned at
birth/someone whose gender identity lines up with their
       biological sex.
       Transgender
Someone who feels they are the opposite gender that they were
       assigned at birth.
       Genderqueer
Someone whose gender identity isn't quite male or female. This
can be used as an umbrella term or a stand-alone identity. This
includes but is not limited to: bigender, genderfluid, etc.
       Non-binary
Someone whose identity is outside the gender spectrum, as in not
male or female at all. This may fall under the genderqueer
umbrella. This may include but is not limited to: agender,
androgyne, etc. This can be an umbrella term or a stand-alone
       identity.
If I'm missing some or these explanations can be improved or
made clearer, please let me know so I can edit the post.
       Thanks, I hope this helped.
