Prologue
“I'm back!” the young man called as he opened the door to his
small cabin. He was a disheveled man, but strong, thanks to a
decade of building gold storages in The City. He was short and
stout, with a grizzled beard and bright green eyes – which
stared lovingly at a little girl.
“Daddy!” cried the little girl as she ran towards her father,
her small feet pattering across the ground. Her father hugged
her tightly and lifted her up, throwing her up in the air and
catching her repeatedly, a routine they had every day. He
tickled her gently.
“Daddy!” she giggled. “Stop it!” His hard eyes softened at her
pleased look, and his face crinkled into a smile.
“What would you like for dinner, my little Ari?” he asked as he
set her down on the ground.
“Soup,” she replied happily, enunciating the word clearly and
slowly, as she savored it. “I want soup.” Her father stood up
and stroked his rugged beard in thought.
“Alright,” he said, as he ruffled her hair. He stepped over a
small doll on his way to the kitchen. It had different sized
buttons for eyes and sticks replacing arms. It sat placidly as
he began cooking. A few hours later the smell of onion soup
wafted into the kitchen. Ari, who was sitting in the living room
and playing with toys, looked up as she inhaled the scent.
“Mmmm,” she said as she closed her eyes softly. “It smells
delicious, Daddy!”
“I’m glad you like it,” he replied. He ladled the soup out into
two small bowls and brought them over to a small wooden table.
Ari rushed over and sat down quietly onto a little stool, her
chin barely coming over the table. They ate together, Ari
sipping the soup slowly and her father eating quickly. And there
was a perfect balance between the two, a perfect chemistry, and
they both loved each other with all their heart.
The peace wouldn't last long.
There was a knock on the door. Her father got up from his seat
quickly, and approached the small front door cautiously, as if
it were a beast of some sort. As he opened it, a large dark
figure stepped inside, sopping wet in a dark brown cloak. He
took it off and shook it roughly, sending droplets of water in
all directions. Ari's father shivered. It was a man, dressed in
a simple tunic, although his attire wasn't what unnerved him; it
was the man's cold, dark glare, which surveyed the shabby home.
“We will have the girl,” he said, interrupting the silence. He
shoved Ari’s father aside and walked briskly over to Ari. She
was confused, but she knew that the man meant harm. She stepped
backwards, stumbling over her doll. He reached for her with
large, stubby fingers, and she scrambled to the back door, only
to be grabbed by the scruff of the neck and pulled toward him.
She screamed and kicked, the smell of whiskey filling her nose,
and her father rushed over, having recovered from his momentary
shock. The man drooped low under the back door, and ran out into
the alleyway behind the house, and along to the front road,
where a large drilling machine lay, waiting. Without hesitation,
he threw the girl into the back seat and jumped into the front
seat, revving the engines up quickly. He drove away, leaving
Adam Pesiky speechless. He ran after the vehicle, feeling all
the blood in his body rush up into his head. His heart was in
his throat, and he felt sick, like he was going to throw up.
For several miles he ran, through the streets of The City,
weaving through people and oily machines, and toward his one and
only daughter. But slowly his breath became ragged, and his
sides started aching, and he could chase no longer. His heart
throbbing, he yelled at the top of his lungs. The smell of smoke
reached him and the sound of engines filled his ears. His eyes
were watering, and his whole world was a blur. He reached out,
summoning the last of his energy, even as the drilling machine
faded into the distance.
“ARI!” he cried out, before he collapsed and blacked out, never
to see his daughter again.
