       Split Ends: Chapter One: Madeline

       Chapter One
       Madeline
       Ever since I learned to drive last year I’ve almost wrecked
       twice. I look back at it and laugh. My sister looks back at it
       and experiences a rush of traumatic memories. Nevertheless, I’m
       going to drive places, despite her concerns of personal safety.
       This is what’s running through my head as I speed through the
       freeway.
       “Maddie! Watch out! I don’t want to get killed an hour before my
       graduation!” I grit my teeth.
       “You’re not going die, Claire. I’m driving perfectly normal.
       “No, you’re not.” She assures me. “You drive like a maniac.”
       “That’s fifty, you owe me twenty bucks.” I say in a sing-song
       voice.
       “I know, I know.” She catches my eye. “Are you okay, Maddie?”
       She asks. I sigh.
       She asked me the same question everyday for the past three
       years. I don’t know what value it has. She got sick nine years
       ago, she was cured two years ago. Now I can sleep at night.
       I’ve been okay. There’s nothing to not be okay about. My
       sister’s safe, I have a boyfriend, I have friends.
       But I’ll lose everything when they go to college. Again.
       Claire, Jack and Jake are graduating today. I’m about to be a
       senior. I’ve known it would come for awhile; I just didn’t want
       to think about it. Jack said he’d come back for my prom. Claire
       said she’d come visit every weekend. Jake said he’d call every
       day.
       But it’s not the same.
       But still I drive Claire and me closer to my downfall. I do all
       the right things, check the rear-view mirror, and keep my hands
       at ten and two. I keep it all inside, my hurt, confusion, pain.
       All inside.
       Like always.
       I finally pull into the school parking lot and park. We get out
       and are immediately greeted by the boys.
       “Hello, beautiful.” Jake says to my sister. He twirls her around
       in his arms. “Today’s the big day.” She nods.
       “It is,” She takes a deep breath and looks at me. “We’ve been
       through it all.” I close my eyes.
       “Claire, stop. You’re going to make me cry.” I tell her. She
       hugs me.
       “It’ll be okay.” She whispers. I nod.
       “I know,” I lie. She lets go of me and is soon replaced with
       Jack.
       “Hey,” He says. I look up at his six foot figure.
       “Hey,”
       “Are you okay?” He asks.
       “I’m wonderful,” He kisses me softly.
       “I don’t know when it’ll be the last time I’ll get to do that
       for awhile.” An invisible tear falls down my face.
       “Kiss me again, then.” I tell him.
       And he does.

       That was so good! I can already tell we are going to be on a
