It's Not Okay | Prologue

"It's going to be okay." Mom had told me after Dad was diagnosed
with gastric cancer.
"It's going to be okay." Mom had told me after our house burned
down.
"It's going to be okay." Mom had told me after my newborn little
sister almost died.
"It's going to be okay." Those five words have been said to me
so many times, but they were never true. Something bad always
happened to my family, and just as things started to get better,
something else happened. Nothing could stay good and happy for
long in my family. But my mom kept telling my sister and I that
it would be okay, even when horrible things happened.
That one sentence seemed to be the only thing Mom ever said
anymore, and I hated it. I hated it with a fiery passion.
Because things were never okay.
And I knew they never would be.
