when a knot is not a knot among ropes and tangles

If you'd like to see a movie of the indian rope trick (a pencil
levitating upwards to stand on its point) then let me know right
       here.
Its in Basic, but is trivial for you to rewrite in another
       language.
The secret is to be REAL. Real things are NOT linear - despite
all the nonsense we are taught at school
All it takes is a bit of vibration and the pencil stands up!

I have a program that will draw knots on screen but I need help
knowing how to untie them - or is just pulling the ends enough
(i.e it is a mere tangle - NOT knotted!)
PM me or reply here if you'd like to help me

all the stuff you're talking about seems related so i would like
to merge them into a single thread

I doubt that a heading "John Free's Progs" would attract many
       people
If you can find any other connection then PLEASE LET ME KNOW
The fact that I find BASIC easiest to program is trivial and
immaterial - it is the interdisciplinary nature of the IDEAS
       that counts.
It is so exciting and useful to realise that what we learn in
one specialisation helps us and gives insights in other
       completely different areas.
There is NO NEED to be "expert specialists" unable and unwilling
to understand folk trained in other areas!

easy, the knots mentioned in one are mentioned in another, the
ideas from one topic are reused in the next, i just want to save
some space and if they all fit it just seems appropriate

       Good idea!
Welcome to put ALL my "Knots and Tangles" under a single topic -
       any you like.
How about "When is a knot not a knot" ::)
