Exploring on a snowy day lead me to a bunch of houses and this
beautiful house was one of them. After several failed attempts I
was sure this place was inaccessible..thankfully I was wrong.

What a lovely home. I wonder why it was abandoned?
The basement was a bit creepy but hey, at least they had a new
       water heater.

It's been bought now from what I've heard.
They were generally turned into homes for pregnant and runaway
teenage girls. Then the state began to provide better assistance
as well as families began to accept if their girls were unwed
mothers. I remember very well even up until the late 60's a
neighbor had become pregnant and her family shunned her and sent
her to a girls home for unwed mothers.
Anyways, eventually these homes just became redundant. They used
to run by the Catholic Church which just began to sell them off
to anyone. Some became nursing homes or places for the mentally
ill. Then the feds began to cut funding for the mentally ill and
these homes just ended up becoming abandoned.

Funny you should mention their use. I watched a movie last week
about girls who were sent to a home, err, prison, run by the
Sisters of Mercy in Ireland. The girls had either had a child
born out of wedlock, or been raped or even just been
flirtatious. It was so hard to watch because it is based on a
true story and this too was in the 60s, not all that long ago.

It was very common to send the girls away and I remember it
happening in my neighborhood. But I never knew were they went no
one ever mentioned the name or location of these homes or
"schools" some were called schools and we always thought it was
a private rich peoples school. Never knew why it happened until
much later when a girl I knew told us she was being sent and
why. It was very depressing, she was always nice to us. Played
stick ball with us didn't care what color we were or that some
       of us were Natives.

It pains me greatly when I think of what humans have done, and
continue to do, to one another.
