About Dragon Slayers and Ranks
By: LucasMapurunga Date: March 31, 2012, 7:48 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Warning : Long Text. Suggested to read only if you really...
well, want to discuss it. There are SPOILERS inside !
So, today I was thinking about Dragon Slayers and their
ranks, what left me to think about their real differences and
some other stuff.
First of all, Dragon Slayer's Rank goes from 1st to 5th.
In my view, that may be wrong, a first ranked Dragon Slayer is
just some average, hard training warrior that understands
something of magic (as we know, at least one element) or a mage
him/herself. As seen in chapter 7, a soldier comments to another
that he is "almost a dragon slayer" and he has still some tests
to make.
If a 5th Ranked is someone so godlikely strong which in the
rarest cases (e.g Tharo) can even beat strong Dragons single
handed (apparently), what really defines someone as one ? You
must slay some of these before beign ranked?

Without touching gameplay elements, just the plot
itself and the cinematics, we do know that Phodom may at least
be 40+ years old. He fought in the Dragon War more than 12 years
ago, and after that he went to live with Birgitta. After all
this time, his fighting skills were bad, and he was really old
for a melee fighter depending only of raw strenght and some
magic.
Galeoth is really old. I guess he may be more than 70+ old... he
is a mage with vast knowledge of magic and magical items and
stuff, and never stopped searching for the dragons, studying or
developing his skills.
Fradz seems to have less than 30 years old, as he call both
Phodom and Galeoth as "gramps", but he has quite some talent. I
guess he is 3rd ranked because of his "way of life" than because
of his combat skills. He, as Galeoth, apparently stayed active
in this 12 years.
Again, who ranks the Dragon Slayers ? Maybe it's more political
influence than power ? Phodom seems to be really strong, and is
a well known Dragon Slayer, as even Galeoth seems to show him
some respect. Galeoth is a name known to all, and Fradz is a
moron.

If Phodom didn't retire, would he be promoted to a 5th
rank ?
Aero stated somewhere that ranks proved power, and as such, a
3th ranked wouldn't beat a 4th, and the 4th ranked wouldn't beat
a 5th one. But in Fradz case, he is a 3th ranked which has a
dragon inside him, and he doesn't show his powers normally.
If we take the duo Fradz and Phodom, Fradz should be way weaker
compared to Phodom, but they beat a Esper (again, ignoring
itemization and other details), and they both survive. Galeoth,
Phodom and Fradz fight against Yurgimar's summon, and the dragon
says the three of them together are strong, but if they powers
were so vastly different, won't him priorize saying Galeoth is
stronger ? This is seen more than once in the history.
Again, I ask if their difference is just political, and whose
function is to promote the Dragon Slayers. Do they have a
Council of some sort ?
Well, these were just some random toughts, and I hope that, if
someone does get to here, they may share their toughts about it.
Thanks for reading ;D
Hi, I find some of your points really interesting.
Personally I think it's most likely that the King is responsible
for promoting the dragon slayers.
To the meaning of their ranks, I would offer the following
perspective:
Dragon Slayers are a group of Elite Fighters, there is a Basic
Training, which makes them a Rank 1 Dragon Slayer. From there
on, they start accepting missions and fighting against different
evil creatures.
If the take part in some especially hard fights and gather
enough reputation, the king will eventually decide to honor
them, by promoting them. So the Rank of a Dragon Slayer displays
not only his strength and experience, but also the number of his
great deeds.
If you look at it this way, you can easily explain different
ranks.
Galeoth: He is the oldest and fought in the war with the dragons
for many years. In this time there were many battles, to gain
reputation in. Furthermore is he the son of a legendary Dragon
Slayer, Vandart. So Galeoth had enough time and through his
father good opportunities to earn himself promotions, until he
became a fith ranked Dragon Slayer.
Phodom: He is much younger than Galeoth and only fought in the
last years of the war with the dragons. So it is safe to assume,
that he had not half as many chances, to win himself reputation
within the kindom. Despite of this, he became famous for his
kind heart and his willigness to protect the innocent. It was
this attributes that made him famous and if he had not left the
Dragon Slayers to become a farmer, he would have had the
potential to become a fith ranked dragon Slayer too.
In my oppinion this rank is a result of timing (he only joined
the war, when the greatest battles had already been fought) and
his kindness, which made him retire almost immediately after the
war.
Fradz: He is the youngest, and I doubt, that he could fight a
lot during the war. He must have been a very young man back
there. Nevertheless he is a third ranked, which implies, that he
has already proven to be quite capable. Personally I assume,
that his low rank is more due to his childish and disrespecting
behaviour combined with his youth, than to the fact, that he is
no match for Dragon Slayers like Galeoth of Phodeom.
However Aero stated in his story Thread that the rank of Dragon
Slayers is directly linked to their respective powers.
If this were the case, Fradz is definitly wrong ranked.
Additionally some aspects of the campaign do not fit into this
image:
--> Why does Phodom say about a only 3rd ranked Dragon Slayer:
"A better Dragon Slayer would be hard to find" (this would
implie there are only a very few higher ranked Dragon Slayers)
--> Why does the king call them his best dragon Slayer team ?
From what we have seen, Tharo alone is by far stronger than this
"team", although Galeoth is a 5th ranked Dragon Slayer just like
him.
Alfred is a 4th ranked Dragon Slayer. Means he is significantly
stronger than Fradz.
(Got to go now, would love to keep discussing l8r on :D )

OK ,here's my review of dragon slayer ranks.
Rank 1-
STR - A warrior with a basic weapon and armor that has
common fighting skills and knows something about magic.
AGI - A rouge with common back stabbing skills that shows
potential in stealth.
INT - A magi with knowledge about arcane magic.
Rank 2-
STR - A warrior with uncommon inventory that shows
great defending skill and knowledge about both defensive and
offensive magic
AGI - A trained stalker that can master posion weapons of some
sort or even the complicated shadow skills
INT - A mage clasified in one element and arcane
magic.
Rank 3-
STR - A warrior with rare fighting skills and power
over one element that helps him gain more defense.
AGI - An assassin that uses the power of one element to empower
his own skills
INT - A wizzard with not only arcane and elemental magic , but
also knowledge about alchemy and jewelcraft
Rank 4-
STR - A extremely strong warrior that has significant
control over one element and empowred defense.
AGI - An unique renegade with mastery over one element and over
the delicate skills of shadow that can inflict tons of damage.
INT - An arch-wizzard with supreme mastery over arcane power and
nearly perfect control of another element.
Rank 5-
STR - A legendary fighter that can endure tons of
damage , can inflict heavy blows , and supreme control over one
element that he uses to defend and offend.Has myth weaponarry
and he's known by the mere population
AGI - A ninja(i don't think there is another word to describe
this) with godlike speed and supreme control over the element
that allows his skills over shadow to become even powerful.
INT - A sage with supreme control over arcane magic and his
choice of element that is powerful enaught to unlock even
another element that'l help his magic do a rampage.
That beeing said , you're kinda right. In my opinion fradz has
the necesary speed to be a 5th rank , and galeoth masters only
arcane and ice magic , without a knowledge about some other
element , so he deserves rank 4th , and phodom's weaponarry is
no that legendary so he is good at 4th rank.
Why they don't have that title?Well a dragon slayer of rank 4 or
5 must know the rights of a captain , of a leader, so he has
responsabilities not only for himself , but for a whole
team. That thing cannot compete with fradz. He is way to reckless
to care about anyone else then himself
And galeoth is rank 5 merely because of the influence (you were
talking about) that his father , Vandart , left before he
died.People wach him and say "Lol that's the son of vandart who
could move a whole mountain with just a finger omg , he must be
a 5th rank dragonslayer"
So that's kinda it i guess

It makes sense if you compare fradz with tharo, their power
differences are enormous, so i think fradz shouldn't be a 5th
ranked, a 4th ranked maybe. What did you mean by delicate skills
of shadow? Fradz can become invisible, but i don't think it's a
"delicate skill of shadow" (considerating him like a 4th
ranked).
I think Phodom is more strong than we think, but not strong
enough to be a 5th ranked...
Galeoth maybe can't control another element(and i still angry
how could a ice mage almost freeze to death)but galeoth
manipulates water and ice with a ability that is far stronger
than many magics in game, (i still don't know from where the
magic hammer came from though), i don't know if ice and water
are the same element, but still we can't say for sure that just
because you mastered a element it'll now unlock a new element
(yes, i think you're wrong about this black).
Another thinks we have to considerate are the exceptions:
-Tharo is a exception of exceptions, he's just too strong and to
mysterious
-Fradz has a far more potential than Tharo(because of ...
Fradz), but he still not that strong(yet very strong)
-I think Phodom may be a exception too, maybe he's stronger than
many 4th ranked, but yet weaker than 5th ranked.
-In my opinion, Galeoth isn't thaaat strong considering he's a
5th ranked, of course he's stronger than any dragon slayer under
him(theorically), but i think as a 5th ranked he is kind of
weak.
Another observations:
-The difference between a 3rd -> 4th looks like enormous, and
4th -> 5th, looks like even bigger(of course the execeptions may
break these rules)
-Galeoth is more famous than strong(like you guys said) and he's
friendship with the king maybe turned him into a 5th ranked more
easily(although he deserves it)to make his dragon research
easily
another thing, if you consider the Black's review(that i really
liked) there's no

@Shino: If you have read the mange 'Fairy Tail' you will know
where the hammer comes from. Basically Galeoth 'alchemizes' ice
to create a hammer.

Well, this looks fun. May as well say my 2 cents (or 1 cent, I'm
running out of money these days). I guess I'll list it in a
couple ways, what kind of soldier they are and their type of
understanding and also they're standing in a military hierarchy.
1st Rank-
An above average soldier or guard with high
potential. Has a good understanding of combat and magic. Can not
use any melee skill or magic spell exceptionally. This rank is
the "infantry men" of the dragon slayers. They are inexperienced
with any fighting of dragons or have very little.
2nd Rank-
A much better, more equipped soldier with
experience. Has a great understanding of combat and magic. It is
the "squad captain" of the 1st rank soldiers. Little
understanding of elemental powers (they haven't come close to
mastering them yet). They participate in missions and have some
experience with dragon slaying or knowledge about fighting
them.
3rd Rank-
A well-equipped soldier with well above
average or unique skills. Has a unique or amazing understanding
of either combat or magic. They are very good with their
respective element. They participate in special missions and
have a good amount of experience in fighting dragons or knows a
great deal about them. They are considered the "sergeant" or the
"lieutenant" of all the ranks. They have some command and weight
to the other soldiers.
4th Rank-
A extremely well-equipped soldier with amazing
and new or different skills. Has a tremendous or incredibly wide
understanding of both combat and magic and has either to use at
their disposal. They are respected and well-known for their
respective element and use unique spells catered to their style.
They are extremely good at fighting dragons and often lead a
troupe of soldiers and other 3rd and 2nd rankers into battle.
They are the "vice-captain" and "captains" of the ranks. They
lead and execute multiple special missions and even some special
missions on their own. They have done many great things that
have made them memorable for humanity. They have slain multiple
dragons with moderate to little help.
5th Rank-
The best equipped soldiers with the strongest
items ever forged or found. They have ground-breaking skills
which have never been seen before and they are almost to the
point of superhuman. They have the best and beyond of
understanding in both combat and magic and use both effortlessly
and gracefully. They are in a class of their own for their
respective element and create new spells or skills to
accommodate their own style. They are the best at fighting
dragons and can even kill some on their own. They are the
"commanders" or "generals" of the ranks.
They most commonly work alone or with the front lines and
centers of attention when needed to. They will only lead the
most important and top-secret missions. Each 5th rank dragon
slayer is legendary in their own right and have been marked down
in history as immensely important and great. They are in a class
of their own and the difference between 4th and 5th rank is
significantly clear.
That's what I think it goes like for the ranks. Also, for
Fradz's case, I think that he is not a 4th Rank only because of
the way he acts. He certainly has the skill to become one, just
not the attitude. 4th Rankers have to be leaders, and Fradz just
can't be one with the way he acts.

Wow, people really read that ;)
I guess that the common sense would really say that the
difference between a 4th ranked and a 5th ranked are huge, and I
really agree with that.
My point is the deservance, as you saw. I mean, Phodom IS really
strong. Who says he is not as strong as a 5th ranked ? Galeoth
shows him some respect, and Galeoth is far too proud to really
show that to anyone.
@Aero, what had Galeoth really done ? He really slayed Dragons
alone and stuff of this kind ? Apart from his high knowledge, he
does not seem that strong. Well, he beaten a sper, and that's
much...
Prospero (at chapter 4) is a 4th ranked, right ? I think Fradz
and Phodom are far and far stronger than him.
But if it's the king (and not some other people) who promotes
the Dragon Slayer to a upper rank, than it's understandable.
After : this is not meant to add nothing. It was under general
discussion, see ?
