New Mana System (A Must Read!!)

Many people have pointed out 1 of the problems with the current
mana system leveling ranks of spells is not always a good idea.
My brother proposed an interesting system that I think he said
is used in DOTA.
When you level the mana cost of spells automatically goes up.
But when you level up a spell it actually reduces the mana cost
since you are more proficient with that spell.
This system does a few nice things, 1 it helps make sure that
you grow the size of your mana pool or you will find yourself
able to cast fewer and fewer spells, but as gear gets better
this is easier and easier. Also it will instead of discourage
leveling spells up would offer a good incentive to. Since we all
know leveling spells is supposed to make you stronger that is
consistent with the theory crafting. But enough of what I think,
I really want to hear what you guys have to say!

I hav no problem with mana, maybe just chapter 1 2 and 3, later
chapter with the help of 2 items or 1 set item and u hav to
control 3 characters, i think u never hav problem as well.
Heroes in dota when lvl up, they gain STR, AGI and INTEL => they
gain mana per lvl. If u want Phodom, Fradz hav more mana when
lvl up, Aero must does a lots of thing to balance it. With the
help of items, potions, i think it's not a big issue.
I dont understand that sentence:"When you level the mana cost of
spells automatically goes up. But when you level up a spell it
actually reduces the mana cost since you are more proficient
with that spell." but what i said is what i know abt DOTA ;D

I agree mana becomes a bit simpler after the first few chapters.
And yes currently mana pools grow as you level while spells do
not go up in cost.
The idea with this new mana system is every time you level up
the mana cost to cast each of your spells goes up, forcing you
to do something to offset this increase in cost.

I think current mana system is nice the way it is.
You can really have mana problems in the first chapters, okay.
But that is normal, guys. In a RPG and games like that, where
the char needs energy to cast skills, in the beginning the
amount of energy is small, forcing the player to use it's skills
well. As we know, when you get some nice itens, the mana problem
ends, and trying to make a new system could imbalance the whole
thing.
And the mana cost growing with the spells is fair, as the spell
power increases with it. And in TCO, the damage calculation is ,
in its majority, calculed by stats and such, and these things
increase when heroes level up.
Even in DotA, heroes like King Leoric can't really spam stuns in
early game, or he will run oom...
Eeer... long talk. But these are my thoughts ;)

I think he said that the mana costs increases, but the
proeficiency (skill effect, damage and stuff) increases
together, and in reality the skill becomes cheaper than it was
before... and it's kinda true.

To keep people leveling their abilities instead of just leveling
master abilities. So, is that new idea good or bad? Or should
there be other way to keep players attract leveling abilities
instead of Master Abilities? Or is the current one good enough?
What I see is that I'll make master abilities give 100 damage
instead of 150. Also, 20x200 = 2000 spell damage isn't that much
in the end. Best items can give about that much. What do you
think?
At level 10 to 20 abilities have mana cost about 400 to 1200.

Well, it is quite a good idea really, but I think this should be
implemented only on harder mode, thus they need to buy items
that increase mana points and mana regeneration as well as to
make sure that you grow the size of your mana pool or you will
find yourself with insufficient mana to cast more spell, while
that gold that is used to buy the item that increase mana point
and regeneration could be used to buy item that is far more
suitable for the hero, since those mode are for player that
aiming for more challenge and harder difficulty as well.

I didn't get it. Why this new idea would be only good at higher
levels?

Okay first off, mana cost of spells in dota does NOT go up when
your hero levels up. Some spells get a lowered mana cost when
you increase their levels, but most have a set mana cost, and
some get increased cost in mana.
Second, 20x200 isn't 2000 >.< its 4000.
But, I'm up for the ability improvements, as for the mana system
goes, I'll go either way.
