       NF Evasion

Apologies if this has been addressed elsewhere but I don't see
it in the errata. When bomber spots NF there is the option per
rule 5.6 to attempt evasion but the discussion then goes on to
talk about searchlights? There is only table 4.7 for
searchlight evasion. Am I being thick?

No!!! :D Not thick. I play if searchlights cone me, I can
evade if I want to try it. (I usually don't in the target
zone). I apply the cork screw effect to a subsequent NF attack
(but this may not be correct). It is an evade in that zone so
that is why I apply the cs factor.
If no searchlights or AAA, and the NF spots me, I attempt to
spot NF. Only if successful do I get to corkscrew. If the NF
is not detected, he gets to shoot first--then if available
gunner can engage, he gets to return fire. If both spotted--fire
       is simultaneous.

So does corkscrew only possibly work for continued attack roll?
What of initial attack? Can that be evaded if NF spotted? What
       would you roll on?

The way I play it is:
       - check Kammhuber ...if no check for flak barge if water near
coast or if coast just apply an automatic light flak for coast
       ....no lights
       - but if Kammhuber Yes, then check lights. Apply +1 for heavier
coast AAA, and + 1 for lights
...if no continue flak without light modifier but with the +1
       Coadt AAA
       IF LIGHTS YED
       ....THEN bomber can attempt evade
....roll for collision ...if no Collision, bomber corkscrews
       successfully
If corkscrew then roll on the evade.
If no on evade, apply +1 on AAA and DRM for NF detection
...although the light effects is not really that large.
I always felt lights are more scary than the game protarys.
Honestly the worst effect I see with lights is the DRM for the
       bomber spotting the NF

If no lights? NF combat per 5.6 still allows corkscrew but not
       clear how resolved.

       Here's how i do it.
If coned by searchlights i try to evade on table 4.7
Then i roll for collision regardless if successful or not
       Then i go to NF
       if spotted NF i corkscrew.
If no lights then no evade
       NF is corkscrew if spotted

Shockingly confused! Such a basic circumstance. Not clear
whether we should roll on 4.7A even if no searchlight or
whether corkscrew is just a DRM on 5.14 for CONTINUED attack. I
think the second is the most likely - it is why the DRM on 5.14
is there...and why there is no other table to roll on to see if
       corkscrew was successful.

       Thats what I do too.
Makes sense, because IF you spot the NF, you either decide too:
       a. fight it out: no cs, but better hit chance.
       b. try to spoil attack/shake him: cs.
If you NOT spot NF: he executes desired attack.
If its a VC or SM, you should be in real trouble.

Have posted the question to Steve Dixon via his website. I will
       post any reply here...

       Reply from Steve Dixon:
When it comes to night fighter combat -- if you decide to use
the corkscrew, note the modifier on your mission log sheet.
There is no Table to determine resolution of the maneuver as in
searchlights. The negative modifier of the maneuver will affect
the aim of the German nightfighter (and your bomber), and it
will also affect the fighter's ability to maintain contact when
rolling on Table 5-14 at the end of the combat round.
       ----------------
So, there is no 'evading' the first attack, but there is a
modifier reducing the likelihood of the NF hitting and reduced
       chance of the attack continuing.
