Great and sharp pic. So many men without the frog skin camo
utilities. Also, note the Marine 37mm anti-tank gun in the
background near the log structure.

Right. So any photo interpretation you may need just ask. I have
a background in military intelligence. You may also remember
that I was the first to find some of the tanks in the photos on
the old website. Notably CANNONBALL in the fuel pit and CHARLIE
nearby. That was years ago when I first joined TOTW. Later Jon.

Looking at the CP photo closer I see that there are two TBX-8
Radio/Transmitter Unit 43060s in use. Each has a 24' 8 and 1/4"
tall antenna and a hand driven generator mounted on a board. I
believe the initial operator was awarded the silver star or
maybe even a Navy Cross for establishing and maintaining a radio
net for many hours without relief.

Yep...Navy Cross. That was Jon's dad's buddy PFC John M. Gross.
Partial picture of him to the right of Corporal Orville Broeker.
March 1st 1944 in Hawaii.

Here is some info on the picture: "This photo shows Shoup's
command post. The Marine on the left might be Gordon Stevens and
to the right operating the radio with headphones is Bill Travis.
The bearded Marine operating the generator behind them is Frank
"Henry" Lupien. Walthrop is sitting under the tree with his back
against the side of hole. According to Bill Haddad this picture
is probably from the third day." From

Looks well established and rather calm all around so yes
probably the third day in my opinion.

At this time John Gross had been relieved after more than 48
hrs. Here is some info on Gross:

Of course I have more
info but need to get it on the website.

Just for interest sake here is another account that I am having
a hard time piecing together with the 2nd Marine CP what was
actually happening with radios:

Elwin was with 2/8.
