       LVT-1 off Red 1
By: TRGodwin Date: December 8, 2019, 12:05 pm

Does anybody know the number on this LVT-1? Very near the
trajectory of where the LVT-1 ended up in a crater on the beach.
The picture has a blurred number and what appears to be possibly
a name however unreadable. Even maybe a boat number sign hanging
       off back right-hand side?

Gunny and Godwin; I want to put together a new map using a lot
of hi-res photos and tech that is available. My first thought
was to pool the locations of every identified LVT, which you
fellows seem to have a handle on. I researched and wrote "Once
Upon A Lifetime: The Epic True Story of CPL William Wesley
Bennett, USMC." between 2014 and 2019 and am researching a new
book on the history of D-2-18, storied combat engineers of
Tarawa. I have most of the high-res photos available from
Quantico, as well as the original "sector map", which will be
the base of the project. I am willing to share info back and
forth and would like your help getting started. You can contact
me at brentof4@yahoo.com or 815-325-0707. Thanks, Brent A.
Peterson. Anyone else that has LVT knowledge is welcome too! BP

       Brent,
Sounds like a project! Tom G. has gotten the greatest
collection of aerial photos with timestamp. This are simply
astounding in detail. I look at them every week and find new
       details.

       Hello All,
I have done extensive research on the LVT's at Tarawa for the
last 25 years. I would love to see if anyone has new
       information.

       Hi Tom,
Like the Gunny said, this is LVT 11, IRON MIKE, it has a
grappling hook for the barb wire on the rear deck, and the
"numbered sign" is the radiator cover, it is welded on each side
of the "track side fenders aka catwalk" these were on the first
production run of the LVT-1, the radiator ports were uncovered
       after that.

Thanks for the additional info, Al. Was hoping to find
additional LVT numbers in the general vicinity of the one in the
crater. Always trying to see if I can get some dots to connect.

As photographed as the Tarawa battle and aftermath was Tom,
'dots' can turn out to be squares and even trapezoids! LOL Al
and I have been at this for decades and still spinning our
heads! Best of luck to be sure!

       So true, so true!
I have told you this before Tom, and Gunny knows this, you end
up with more questions then answers!!
