Clinton G. Brame 2/8 Cook

I think I have every book ever written on Tarawa. To this day,
however, the best material has always come from those who fought
there. Their words and first-hand accounts are treasure. For
years, there were very few Marines who would say anything; this
included my dad. Not one word. For some reason, somewhere in the
90s, a number finally started to talk about it. Clinton's story
is one of a number I've found. Worth the read for those who
remember. I wish there were more of them.... Jon has done a
great job getting Tarawaontheweb.com back up and running. Hope
one day we can see the original Tarawa talk forum and also the
The Living Tarawa Veterans Project. Great history and treasure
in there too!

I think I also have every book written about Tarawa. And my dad
didn't talk about the fighting, he might say he had someone in
his platoon from some city or town I mentioned. We had a
neighbor who fought in Europe and he and my dad would swap
stories and I would hide where they couldn't see me and listen
to them. Late in life, dad had a stroke and after that he would
speak a little about the war. So many things I wish I had asked
but somehow I knew not to, so I didn't. After he died, I
managed to get in touch with several Marines who had fought with
my dad in K/3/2 and later L/3/2 and have a couple dozen letters
from them describing their memories of my dad. I am putting
them in a book for the family, along with other things relative
to the war and other family stories so that my children and
grandchildren have a written history of my parent's life and his
time in the Pacific. Only one of my children was born by the
time dad died, and she didn't really get to know him much at
all. It's important to me that they have those stories.
Thanks for posting the link. I will read it first thing in the
morning.

Sounds like we pretty much fell in line on the same trail, Mike.
Dad was in E/2/2. I joined the 2ndMarDiv Association in the mid
90s after he passed away. I used the annual mailing list to peel
out some Marine's addresses from E/2/2 and got a number of
responses; even from those not in the same platoon. Finally hit
pay dirt with a Marine that went in with him who was in his
squad. Had some good conversations with a machine gunner in
H/2/2 also. He passed away just 5 years ago. His squad was
assigned to the three tracs in the 2nd platoon to man the front
guns. He was not with dad's trac but he told me of his two
buddies that were. Unfortunately, they had both passed away by
that time. Doing the same thing with the things I have and
putting it together for my kids and theirs too. Best....TG
