AWOL

My apologies for being AWOL. Many things have happened. One
thing is that the .org address for TOTW was stolen after
Register.com would not assist me in renewing the domain. With a
job change I lost an email address that was tied to this domain.
Register.com would not assist me in changing the email address
after providing them with numerous documents that proved I am
me. Short version, never do business with Register.com. After
the expiration of the .org domain someone snatched up the domain
which I suspect was from Register.com. It is being held for
ransom now as you probably saw. My goal is to get it back but
might cost. That is my next campaign. For the time being use
tarawaontheweb.com and I plan to add some more updates soonly.
Glad to see all carrying on here on the forum.
2nd project is to get the old Tarawa Talk database back into a
usable format for searching. I tinkered with it but I think I
need some assistance with that. I don't think it is too
difficult but I am not very familiar with database programming.
Looking for suggestions on how to proceed with this project.

Good to hear from you, Jon. I was in the business decades ago
but have long since lost any real capability on databases in the
new world. The Old Tarawa Talk data is a gold mine for
researchers in this area. Hope you can get it running again. The
living Tarawa Veterans Project had many nuggets of info as well.
I knew some of those Marines from correspondence many years
back. What is the data format for Tarawa talk?

Tom,
I am not sure of the particular format. Should I post a sample
or would it say in some of the data? I can actually search the
data and find various postings. The other thing is that the
host of the old TT was finally sold to another person after it
was shutdown. Not sure if that is any help but I might try to
track them down.

A sample might provide some information so worth a try. That
aside, tracking down anyone who hosted it previously might be
more fruitful....Once known, most data can usually be exported
to a new format under another host if they don't support the
current format...
