The Spotted Raphael Catfish is a good choice for any cichlid
tank. They are armor plated and only grow to 6" or so. I have
had many exotic L-series Plecos in my cichlid tank. My favorite
is the "gold nugget" pictured here...

Thats a nice pleco!
I've got 1 pleco in my tank. A starry night bristle nose. He's
been in there for a long time and none of the Malawi's bother
him.

I have a gold nugget pleco and an albino BN pleco in my cichlid
tank, absolutely no problems. Also have 5 syndontis petricola
(sp?). my cichlids ignore all of them and show absolutely no
interest. Even my most aggressive who doesn't let any other fish
near him allows the syno to run along him.

My favourite Synodontis cat is S. granulosus, the White Seam
Syno. Maybe one day i'll finally get around to actually getting
one. Seen them in my LFS loads of times. Very cool fish,
primarily black with white edges to the fins and barbels. They
are a Tanganyikan cat but I don't think they would mind slumming
it with some Malawians.

i second the gold nugget. also green phantom plecs stay pretty
small too and look awesome. the synodontis multis are what i
keep. i find them nicer looking than the petricolas

also try to drip acclimate your plecs for awhile since they used
to lower ph levels. both my plecos were slowly drip acclimated
for at least a couple hrs. you dont want to spend 30 bucks on a
pleco and have him die

This depends on where they come from. Both of mine, I acclimated
my normal way because they came from neutral tanks. If you get
them from a place that has very different parameters than yours
(or online), then drip would most likely be the best. If you get
one from your lfs that's not in a specialty tank, it may not be
necessary.
I acclimate by floating for 15min, then adding about 1/4 the
amount of water in the bag (and use this amount through the
process) every 10-15min for an hour.

A tough looking medium size pleco is the Chocolate / Rhino
Pleco. They look like a mini sailfin, still get to 10 - 11" but
look like they could hold their own against anything crazy
enough to have a go. Not as brightly coloured as some but cool
if you like the armoured, big ass sail, hard as nails look. That
and they apparently do a good job with algae too.
