Fluval U4 Filter Media Question
By: Stu4648 Date: September 23, 2014, 2:12 am
---------------------------------------------------------
I am planning on no longer using carbon routinely in my Fluval
U4 Filter as the tank is planted and it is not really needed. I
have some spare if I ever need it. Is it worth replacing it with
anything? I was thinking about just running the standard foam
cartridge and Fluval Biomax media or would it be worth cutting
some finer filter floss to make use of the space vacated by the
carbon cartridge.
I will likely try both just to see although I imagine fine
filter floss if it is anything like the polishing pads in my
Fluval 406 will likely be clogged in 5mins and slow the rate of
flow in the filter.

I run 2 U-4s on my 55 gallon and I was going to stop using the
carbon pads also. I was going to just double up the sponge
filters and let the bacteria and water changes do their work.
The 2 U-4s keep the tank really clean

I do not use the Fluval foam pads, the ones I have are a bit too
thick to double up but it could be a good solution if I ever go
back to the Fluvals. I think I might just see how it goes with
the biomax and the foam pads by themselves. If the biomax does
not get too gunked up I might just stick at that. If it does end
up letting too much through then I will try some additional
filter floss and maybe rinse them out every two weeks rather
than once a month.
