Potions for the Cycle Process

Hi guys , just finished watching the new YouTube video Fish
keeping 101 pt 3 about cycling the tank , as i said in one of my
other posts i am currently in the process of setting up a tank
for African's , as part of the deal with the tank i got all the
rocks , gravel and filters out of the old tank BUT after looking
through many video's and "How To " guides I'm pretty set on
going with sand and a lot larger rock formation , which will
mean I am pretty much going to have to start the whole cycle of
the new tank from the beginning maybe adding a old mature
filter.
My question is can someone put down in like a list form the
chemicals that John mentions in the video , I have used the
Bacteria in a bottle stuff before that claims you can add fish
immediately , but have never really trusted it's claim , but
john also mentions an ammonia stopper/blocker and Nitrite
stopper/blocker . when would you use these products and when
would you add the Bacteria bottle ,
A list of some form and even the actual products would be very
handy ( i know we get all sorts of APi stuff here in the UK )

I haven't watched John's video on the cycling process yet - but
I wouldn't recommend using any kind of ammonia or nitrate
blocker products. I hope he doesn't hate me for saying so, but
I've been in this hobby for years, I've seen the claims, I've
seen all the frustration other hobbyists go though using those
products and .. I think they're a big waste of money and that
you don't get a good solid cycle trying to use short cuts like
that. Eventually, your tank has to go through that
uncomfortable new tank bacteria bloom, spiking ammonia, spiking
nitrite phase or you're not really cycled.
Others might disagree, but that is my opinion which is based on
experience and observation over the past ... over 30 years
(closer to 40 - omg.)
I recommend fishless cycling. It's less work. Less expense.
Less frustration and .. I think the fish like it better too. :)

john was referring to using the ammo lock with a fish in cycle
in order to prevent your fish from dying while getting through
the cycle. he also reccommended prime which detoxifies the
ammonia. both these were suggested so your fish dont die with a
fish in cycle. They dont contribute to the cycle itself. Just
follow the directions for the BB in a bottle. IME, the fastest
way is using old/preexisting media as John also suggests. I
agree with Jen though that a fishless cycle is optimal.

Prime is good stuff. I use it exclusively as my water
conditioner. I'm just not sure it's THAT good. I know some
people swear by it for cycling, and if you've got the fish and
are cycling I would say 'use the prime' but, I'm not sure it'll
take care of all the issues.
Perhaps I'm a pessimist. :P

Jennifer you sound allot like me lol, going against the masses!
On these posts though I'll have to respectfully disagree.
In my 20 years of cycling over 300 tanks I believe products like
Ammo Lock and Prime are essential for a successful "fish in"
cycle. These are products that will help to protect the fish
during the "spikes" but add nothing to the actual cycle its
self. I've had great success since the introduction of products
like "Dr. Tims" , "Cycle" and "Quick Start" which help to boost
the process of the build up of BB. Or at least that's what they
say but how would we really know.

Haha .. John.
I'm not disagreeing that you are better off using these products
with a "fish in" cycle. I'm saying I disagree with fish in
cycles. Let's use the human analogy - when you're in that room
with smoke, would you rather have to depend on a respirator to
keep you away from the smoke or would you prefer they clear the
smoke before you go into the room?
And we actually are a lot a like, John. That became clear to me
in your webcast with Jacob. I think the single one thing you've
ever said that I disagree with is with "fish in cycles." I just
have seen too many fish too damaged doing fish in cycles. It's
not even my fish, it's other people who get fish to cycle and
wind up killing the lot of them. The rest of it, we're very
much of the same school of thought. I too get accused of being
a bit of a tree hugger bleeding heart liberal - which is very
far from the truth - because of some of my opinions about the
aquarium hobby. I raise a lot of "wild type" fish. I like to
be able to trace my fish back to where they were collected and
know they are of pure strain, but I don't like to buy "wild
caught." There were other things you said. And many of those
things are things I think NEED to be said in the hobby. So,
yea.
And .. I do speak my mind, like you do. I try to do it
politely, but there are moments when I find it difficult to live
up to that standard.

I would by a mile prefer to be doing a fishless cycle but ive
found my self in a position where this is not going to be an
option , we had issues while moving a tank and its taken about 3
weeks longer just to get the tank in to possition let alone
start the cycle process and now the fish that came with the tank
have been in the much smaller holding tank for way longer than
intended,
I was just looking for the products that would make this
transition from the holding tank to a brand new setup ( sand ,
rocks , water ) as safe and easy on the fish as possible

One of the products that frequently appears on a lot of
different forums in relation to quickly building up beneficial
bacteria in a new tank were fish are to be added straight away
is Tetra Safe Start. Never used it myself but given the
frequency it seems to get mentioned in relation to situations
such as yours there must be something to it. Others include API
Quick Start, Fluval Cycle and Dr Tim's One and Only.
If you could get some used media from a fully cycled tank even
better, if not one of those mentioned above may help. I'm sure
John has at least some of them on his Amazon links.

There is going to be a small external matured filter running on
it ( 1000 L/H ) to help the tank along while the new larger
filters , rocks and sand gain some bacteria ,
I was trying to work out what the Prime stuff was that everyone
was talking about as it's not something i remember seeing in the
UK but after looking on KGT's site i gathered it was some from
of "introduce your fish immediately cycle starter" like quick
start or the Fluval Cycle both of which we can get here.
so far it looks like im going to need Quick Start and Ammo lock
, anything else that is going to help me along and make this as
easy on the fish as possible ?
