Upgraded to a 120G w/ a Sump, Best way to cycle the sump
       By: Paul B Date: September 22, 2014, 2:56 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I hope we get plenty of folks into this forum, and more people
support John and Lisa for all their hard-work.
I just purchased a 120G w/ a sump as I plan to migrate all my
Cichlids from my 40G w/ an Eheim Canister.
I finished setting up and filling the tank yesterday.
I removed the gravel from my 40G and put it into the 120G
thinking the beneficial Bacteria in the gravel would help with
the cycling process. Tonight I was going to (unless you tell me
otherwise) open my canister filter and poor all the “gunk”
that’s inside the filter into my sump, leaving the sponge
       filters and ceramic rings intact.
Then in a week or so, remove an old sponge from my canister and
       put it into the sump.
Do you think this will help my sump cycle faster? Also, is that
“gunk” in my canister good for the sump or bad?... I was
thinking it was good… But I hope I’m not harming the cycling
       process.
       Thank you
       Paul

       Paul,
The bacteria you desire are attached to the sponge and ceramic
media, they are not free floating in the water or "gunk".
I believe you will be better off taking 1/2 to 2/3 of the
ceramic media in your canister and putting it into the
appropriate sump section. Then refill the canister with new
ceramic and top off the sump with as much ceramic as you
consider it to be full. I would also add a new sponge to the
sump (I am assuming you want both tanks to function).
       Good luck.
       Joe

       Hi Joe,
       Thank you,
I did exactly that, removed 1/2 the ceramic rings, put them in
the new sump, and then removed my floss poly fill, and put that
       into the sump as well.
How about moving the rocks, and artificial plants, any value in
       doing that?
All the sites w/ sumps are reef sites, and they all talk about
live rock and sand, and John does't talk about sumps too much in
       his videos....
       Thanks again for your assistance.
       Paul

I didn't address that because you said you had already moved
some gravel. Yes it is beneficial.
