       Need Some Advice
       By: FishGuyJim79 Date: September 22, 2014, 7:46 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Firstly i would like to say hi from the UK , I've been a watcher
of the YouTube video's for quite some time now gathering idea's
and info on where to go with my next tank , i currently have 12
tanks (i think) holding everything from neon tetra's and guppys
to platinum clownfish up to my 360lt Oscar/Cichlid tank.
I've wanted Frontosa for a very long time and never had a tank
large enough to accommodate what i wanted to include BUT i have
now finally got hold of something which should fit the build , i
recently purchased a 450lt tank from a well known auction site
(wasnt sure if i could say the name) , My issue was/is that the
sale included about 30'ish mixed *malawis* , having never kept
them before i cant really say what they are for sure so i will
just use a blanket name , when it came to moving the tank/fix we
had a 200lt tank setup at home ready to hold the fix while we
got the big tank home and in to possition , the fix will be in
this smaller tank for not much longer than a week tops , we
hooked up the tank with 1 filter from the tank the fix came from
and another filter taken from 1 of my other tanks , also used
rocks from the original home of the malawi's to try and keep as
much of the bacteria present as possible , obviously we couldn't
use the gravel as it was in a tank that was full of fish and
water at the time , anways the 200lt tanl plus fish has been
running fine for a few days now with only one casualty in
transit , this was until yester when i noticed 1 fish had a
cloudy eye and what i can only describe as a cataract looking
lump over its eye ( sorry if its called something else in the
US ) , a single fish didnt really worry me as it may of just
been something i had missed during the move as so much was going
on BUT now ive noticed that over the past 24/36 hours that at
least another 5 or 6 fish have now got this cloudy eye /
cataract problem , we have also just lost another 2 fish that
did not show and physical symptoms , now the water chemistry
isnt going to be spot on because a about 60-70% of the water
was fresh/clean water but nothing that a large scale water
change would do the same , my worry is that its something that
is going to effect and kill off everything in the tank so im
       after some advice / help.
Wow thats a really long winded approach at my question , what it
comes down to is fish that are currently sitting in a smaller
holding tank wth mature filters + rock + 40 original water have
suddenly got this cloudy eye / cataract problem + losing the odd
       fish = help !
PS - Also sorry for the tank sizes being in UK litres

Cloudy eyes on fish can be a symptom of a lot of different
diseases and things, but given the circumstances, my guess would
be that the fish got stressed, someone got a bacterial infection
while their resistance was low and now, everyone else is
catching it. It could also be a fungus of some sort or ich.
It's hard to know not being able to see the tank and even if I
could, it could still be hard to know.
In any case, if it was me, I'd be checking my water parameter
and making sure to keep the ammonia and nitrite down. I'd also
be reaching for the aquarium salt and doing a standard dose
making sure to replace salt as needed if I did any water
changes. I'd probably also start them on a course of
       antibiotics.

I agree that it could be a lot of different things. However, one
issue that I have seen in the past, especially in shipped fish,
is a lack of oxygen. The fish may have not had enough oxygen
       during shipment.

I remember reading something similar on another forum and one of
the resident experts attributed it to a sudden change in pH.

Please check your PH and other water parameters. African
cichlids do respond well to a good amount of salt in their
water...NOT table salt but a pickling salt, or Epsom salt... 1
tablespoon to 10 gallons. Keeping extremely clean water is so
important due to their heavy bio load...none stop crappers lol.
       I hope this helps.
