       Odyssea brand equipment
       By: PaulMartin61 Date: September 21, 2014, 1:56 pm

Who's not looking for a bargain these days?
In the many years that I've been keeping fish, I've only use 3
types of filters. Under-gravel, box, and HOB (hang on back).
I'm now in the market for my first canister filter, and wonder
if these 'budget' filters are worth the money.
The title specifically mentions Odyssea brand, but there are
others like SunSun and truAqua that I've seen advertised, even
       on Craigslist.
So are these brands good? Is the value/performance comparable
to name brands? Anyone have any first hand experience with
       these brands.
I'm looking for a canister for my 40 gallon planted breeder
tank, and like most I'm looking to get the best for my money
       (did I say bargain?)
       Thanks,
       Paul

Yes I started off going the bargain route with buying one of
those Chinese made canisters but when it comes down to it in my
opinion it cost you more in the end. I'm from the UK and I
purchased a allpondsolution EF2000+ or I believe its called a
sunsun in the states 9w built in UV and 55Watts power
consumption so over time this is going to cost you loads in
electricity as if you pick a Eheim pro3 600 (non-UV) only
16watts and even the top of the range Fluval FX6 at 41watts so
if your going to be staying in this hobby then in the long run
       you'll be saving money ;D

I have heard a lot about the SunSun on other forums, some people
swear by them but I have never tried one myself so have nothing
to back that up. I only have Fluvals and have not had any issues
with them so will probably stick with them. I will go with one
of Johns analogies, we know he likes them, Filters are a lot
like car tyres (or could be tires in the US), you could buy some
budget ones that will cost half as much but they will probably
last half as long and give you poorer performance. So for the
same money in the long term you would have been better off with
the good set as you would have had the better performance to
boot. He probably would have phrased it a bit better but you
       know what I mean.
Plus if you shop around you can probably get a better known
brand for not that much more than a budget one. Then of course
there is the second hand market were there is a certain element
of risk but you may hit the jackpot and get a better known brand
for a budget price. Or you could end up with a box full of
busted junk but thats all part of the "fun".

I have had SunSuns on both our tanks...a 304B on the 110 and a
303B on the 55...They are great value for money...loads of media
space, great flow (m+ine never let up til the day it died, more
on that later)...built in 9 watt UV light (not sure how
effective it actually was, but did also warm the water in the
canister)...The 304B burned out just recently on me (out NO
where, no signs nothing), it had been moved to the 55 after
upgrading to a FX6 on the 110 (backed up by a Hydor Pro 600),
since that is the GF's Discus tank, we were in panic mode to get
filtration on it quickly, so we got a Fluval 406 from a big box
store (on sale at least,we got lucky there)...The down sides to
them, no warranty (as far as I know), hit or miss
reliability...I would say your money is better spent on one of
the known brands, they all come with some sort of warranty...My
.02 on suggestion of a little higher priced, but still good
       value is:
Hydor Pro Series- little more than the SS, but GREAT looking
fliter w/ quality through and through...They're cheaper than the
Fluvals, but only in price...their build quality is top
notch....flow is great...comes with both a spray bar and a funky
duck bill sorta looking thing (works great btw)...I was really
impressed...I have ZERO association with company, this is just
one hobbyist to another...and use John's Amazon link to buy,
       help a brother out... 8)

I have been interested in the Odyssea canisters as well. If you
get one, let us know how it works. If I get one before you I'll
       do the same.

i still run the sun sun 304 on one of my tanks with no probs.
the thing i like about them is that theres a ton of space for
media. im also running fluval 406 and a 306 on other tanks that
work totoally fine but dont have as much media space as the sun
sun. the fluvals are easier to use and clean so i like em
       better. if its goin on a 40gal a 406 or a 306 with a HOB would
work nicely. on my 75 gal growout im running the 306 with an
aquaclear 110. the 110 has more space for media so it all works
       out fine.

       I have 6 canister filters I have a Sunsun and a aquatop(which
are exactly the same). I have a 2x Fluval 406 and one 306, and
for my 125gal I have the Fluval FX6. I love canister filters
because you don't have to worry about cleaning them very often.
I travel alot for work and in comes in handy, the sunsun and
aquatop are great filters that hold 4 trays to pack with media.
The can be a pain in the butt to clean and to prime them again,
other then that the UV in them makes them great filters. My
Fluval are the best ones in my opinion, but can be a bit
expensive depending where you get them. The are well worth the
money, sunsun ranges around 80 bucks with a filter media
included, while a 406 is around $110 to $130. You have to buy
more filter media to fill it. FX6 is the best one buy far but
they are around $300 for up to a 400 gallon aquarium. Hope this
       helps!

Since this post, I have bought both an Odyssea powerhead and
heater. Both work great, but only time will tell the true tale.

So I passed on the Odyssea filter. I was unable to find any
text reporting head pressure for any of the Odyssea brand
       canister filters.
Although I'm shopping for my 40 breeder project, this canister
very well could be put on my 100 gallon mbuna tank (2015
project) which will require a minimum head of 40 inches due to
       my stands height.
Instead I went with the SunSun HW303B filter. A work mate has
the same filter and loves it.
With a max head pressure of 96 inches, this should be well
suitable for use on my mbuan project.
It also has a built in surface skimmer and optional spray bar
       return.
So far, I'm very please with the solid build and feel of the
unit. Only draw back is the darn thing is white. Time for some
       spray on Plasti-Dip!
       What I've learned.
GPH ratings are with zero head pressure. Basically an empty
filter with the pump running, measured at the output.
Now add media to your filter and loose 30 to 35% of your GPH.
       (again measured at output)
Add your tubing to your tanks, loose another 5 to 10% of your
GPH. (those long tube runs, turns and twists)
Depending on the height of your tank (distance from top of
filter to top of tank (head pressure) you can loose another 5%
of your GPH. (more so with a lesser head pressure rating)
So my 370GPH SunSun could really be only delivering 180 to 190
GPH with the information above. In my case, that would turn my
40 gallon breeder 4 to 5 times an hour which is fine for this
application. In addition my tank is very low to the ground,
with only 19 inches from top of filter to top of tank and a head
rating of 96 inches I should be well over 225 GPH. (an estimate
       on my part)

I have two Sunsun 303b's on my 55g long. Is it too much?
       Maybe...
Performance-wise, my water is crystal. The flow is strong and
can push waste to the other side of the tank. The canister is a
good 5 feet below the top of the my tank. The trays holds a lot
of media. I would imagine if you only fill the trays 3/4 full
with good media it would flow much nicer.
Cleaning has been pretty easy. I unplug the filter. Close the
valves. Pop out the hose connections. And bring it over to the
bathtub. Reconnecting and restart is just a matter of plugging
everything. I only use the priming button to push the air out
       of the canister.
Speaking of priming, yes the first time you setup the filter you
will need to prime the system. And it's a little bit of a pain.
But shut the valve on the hose connector fill the hoses with
water. Also put water in the canisters as directed. The less
air in the system, the easier it is to get the system going.
The major beef I have is: the top/bulk head has way of trapping
water and if not careful it can spill. Also it makes it seem
like the canister is leaking, so watch out for that...
Even though it has its shortcomings, I think that for the price,
the Sunsun is a solid filter. And I would easily recommend it
       to someone else.
Just realized that this is odyssea question not a sun sun
       question lol. Got carried away...
