Treating Brown Algae with Hydrogen Peroxide?
By: MontanaJosh Date: April 18, 2016, 12:19 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I'm really hoping for help from forum members here. I recently
started getting brown algae in my aquarium. It started at the
top of my tallest plants (all fake) and then on the tops of
other things in my aquarium. I pulled out each item, scrubbed
with a zero chemical scrubber from Petco, then dipped in boiling
water for about 30-seconds (same way I sterilize stuff for my
infant). I also did a 25% water change. I then bout some
Tetra-Algae control and added some. 2 days later, the brown
algae is back. Doing some research, I see lighting is to blame
a lot. Currently my lights come on at 1pm and turn off at
8:30pm. Is that too much lighting?
My big question comes from a bunch of youtube videos I've seen,
where people spray hydrogen peroxide in their tanks right on the
affected areas. This has me very nervous. Is it bad for my
fish? It took months for my aquarium to get the nitrogen cycle
just right, would hydrogen peroxide do harm to my beneficial
bacteria? Again, any help or advice is appreciated in advance!
