       Hello from Indianapolis

I am 65 years old and have been keeping tropical fish for 55
       years. I have 2 big tanks, totaling 605 gallons. I am a
biologist by education and training so I really enjoy the
science involved in the hobby. I currently focus on Lake Malawi
cichlids, and my wish list includes lake Tanganika, saltwater
clowns, and discus- Just have to convince my wife that I could
       expand my hobby.
I like to help fellow hobbyists with their most complex aquarium
challenges. With my 55 years and science background I can
probably provide help if you reach out to me for input. I will
gladly start a chat with you and hopefully give you some new
       perspectives on the hobby.
       Thanks,
       HalfMan HalfCichlid

Hi there! I'm new here too. I live in North Pole, Alaska. New
to saltwater aquariums as well. At the moment I have opae
shrimp and a sally lightfoot crab named Little Toot. She has
her own 20 gallon tank, but the nitrates spiked and killed my
lovely peppermint shrimp. I went and ordered all sorts of stuff
today which was suggested by KGtropicals to include a filter. I
want to eventually get another shrimp, and since I get attached
to my water babies, I definitely do not want them dying. Any
       suggestions? Thanks!!

thanks for the inquiry. One thing, keep in mind that John at KG
Tropicals is a freshwater, not a saltwater guy. Nitrogen cycle
is different for saltwater in several respects: 1. Nitrates
cannot be handled by a large number of saltwater species. 2.
how to deal with nitrates is different. Establishing a nitrogen
cycle via a filter like KG recommended is a first step. This
will eliminate ammonia and nitrite spikes, but not nitrates.
Water changes, very thorough cleaning of the tank
bottom/substrate, and use of saltwater algae/plants are
recommended. You may have an opportunity to add a nitrate
scrubber, check Joey the DIY guy on YouTube:
  HTML https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGLnBvDkaO0.
       This will work
with both fresh and saltwater to take out nitrates.
Given that you are in Alaska watch temperature spikes

Thanks immensely! It makes sense too. I just added some live
algae to my little tanks in hopes that will help with the
nitrates. I can make the algae scrubber for my big tank. I'm
smiling again. Thank you so much.
