One and Only nitrifting bacteria

When using Tim's Nitrifying Bacteria what does it mean when it
says to take off the filter socks? I was under the impression
that you should keep in filter pads and any other bio media.
This would allow the good bacteria to adhere to these things
along with the substrate. I have 2 Marineland 200 filters and a
Hot Magnum canister filter. Thanks for your help.

Filter socks pick up much finer particles then ordinary filter
sponges. I guess they think the socks would block the bacteria,
just guessing.

Also people thoroughly wash out their filter socks killing what
ever the filter sock held. But if there are other means of
keeping good bacteria like on a sponge, bio-balls, etc. I
wouldn't worry about it. ;) I think that is what they mean, so
that the bacteria gets attached some where else.
