Hello From Florida

Hello All,
I kept fish as a kid and have recently become interested in
keeping fish again. Africans have always fascinated me but I've
never had a tank large enough to really get into it. After
listening to John's podcasts I became inspired to set up a
Cichlid tank. I watched Craig's List for a couple of weeks and
scored a 55 gallon tank with florescent hood, stand, a Emperor
400 hang-on-the-back filter, and a master test kit for $150.
I thought that was a pretty good deal but I've heard John say
that 55 is the minimum size tank he would use and I'm hesitant
to start at the bottom fearing that I would eventually want to
move up.
I welcome all opinions.

I only have a 55 gallon setup and have 16 nearly fully grown
mbunas in it. I kept africans in the 70's and 80's and never got
a larger tank. If I was going to keep larger hap's or peacock's
I would get a 6 foot tank. I do run 2 filters that are each
rated for a 60 gallon tank and clean one, wait a week or more
and clean the other so my good bacteria stay healthy.

Hello Vince, and welcome to the forums!
A 55 is a nice size tank to start with, especially since you
scored an awesome deal.
The way I see it, starting at the 'bottom' as you stated simply
gives you a nice 55 gallon quarantine/grow out tank when the
time comes to move into a bigger tank.
Good luck, and keep us informed.
Paul
