I just set up a 55 gal tank in my old tank I was always fighting
algae. I was told that a uv sterilizer would help. Is it worth
buying one if not any ideas to help my problem. thanks

Never used a UV sterilizer, and I have mbuna African cichlids so
I want algae. I just clean it off the glass.

yes a uv steralizer would help greatly with algae. but i think
you need to find out the root of the problem. Too much light can
promote algae growth. maybe keep the blinds closed for longer
periods of time. also, cut the amount of time you leave the tank
light on. Increased phosphate levels in the tank can also
promote algae growth as algae feed on phosphates, but a
situation where algae can grow would still need to be present.

I agree with mrk13p you need to find the root cause of the
problem. I recently had the same problem all I did was reduce
the time my lights on in my tank. But regards to the UV
Sterilizer if you do decide to get one I always oversize it to
my aquarium. Try to refame from buying cheap brands like the
GREEN KILLING MACHINE. Look at this video from Bulk Reef Suppy.
