Thoughts on air driven sponge filters

Just curious, what do y'all think about air driven sponge
filters? Are they good enough to be a stand alone filter, or
       are they just a secondary?

for larger tanks i would say secondary unless you want to have a
bunch of sponge filters taking up real estate. For smaller tanks
it can work as a primary just fine.

I have sponge filters in my tanks and I use the as a secondary
filter, great source to grow beneficial bacteria. They are a
very cheap if you are one a budget and don't care for a big
sponge, I would definitely get one.

Not sure what you were looking for in a response. Mrk13p and
TexMex's answers have to be the two most common answers you'll
       get anywhere.
Sponge/Box filters have been around forever, and for good
       reason. They work!
As long as your able to provide a nice steady air flow (easy
these days), these little sponges give both mechanical and
biological filtration. Cleanup is super easy too.
Course the bad rap for these is simply appearance. Most 'living
room' tanks bypass the benefits of a good sponge filter for
something less of an eye sore.

I just added one to my 55, which is already filtered with a two
sunsun 303b's. The sponge filter is a designed for a 40 gallon
and it's beast. I can see why several DIY guys use a modified
       version.
       Forrest(Cichlidman09) has his ultimate filter

I really like Joey's all in one filter.

As for aquarium real estate, pondguru is a pretty neat idea.
Almost not a sponge filter though.

I think a setting up filtration system combining all three would
       be pretty cool.

oh and I like how you don't have to turn off a sponge filter
       during a water change.
