Ruh Roh!! Badly beaten up fish, can he be saved?
By: HWilson Date: November 11, 2014, 6:55 pm

This gorgeous Otter Point(And by far my favorite of the 25
starting fish I got) went from being the flashiest fish in the
tank to this:

That's not just camera quality. The fish is really bad. Swollen,
cloudy eye, shredded fins, missing scales, dullest he's ever
been.
I already have a suspect, and I have already been thinking about
getting rid of this fish for a while, but I have a big mbuna
hybrid in there that's as mean as they come--He even picked a
fight with my oscar, Zeus, at one point several months
back--With the edition of about 7 female fish, the males are
going a bit nuts, but instead of fighting, it's this one fish
beating the heck out of everyone else. And I digress...
Back to the question: Does the hurt fish (His name is Ziggs)
have a shot? What can I do to help him? I'd prefer not to use
chemicals if I can help it.
Any help is appreciated! I really don't want to lose this fish!

If a fish is not dead it has a chance.
First i would get him into a hospital tank by himself, that will
help reduce his stress level. Even though he may be in a breeder
box in the same same tank, allowing other fish to come close to
him including the offending fish will make him feel stressed.
Second i would get some melafix and treat him accordingly, that
will help prevent infections help him heal his wounds. If you're
not gonna go that route, then clean water and aquarium salt. I
would do daily 25% water changes until you see an improvement in
the fish. From that point maybe going every other day will
suffice but clean water is your best bet without medical drops.
I've had the same situation happen with one of my fish.
Fortunately the fish survived but did lose an eye, so now it
lives in it's own tank with a couple community fish and it has
thrived since.
Good Luck,
Andre

I had the same exact fish get his butt kick in my 120 gal. When
I first put him in he was get along fine with the others. One
week later I woke up and right fin was ripped off, whole right
side of the body was beat up and infected, and not eating. What
I did is put him in a 10 gal tank with Seachem Stress Guard and
Aquarium salt. By removing him from the tank the stress will go
down, and he will fine safe. Two days later he started eating
again, just get some go healing chemicals. API or Seachem sell a
couple of good ones. Just don't give up hope, it took about 3
weeks and he is now back in my 120 gal swimming like a champ.

I made the decision to get rid of the offending fish because he
started terrorizing the rest of the tank. I removed Ziggs and
put him in my 10 gal and put some aquarium salt in there and
raised the temp a bit, and he's eating well and looking better
each day. His fins are growing back remarkably well and he now
has enough fins for regular swimming. His eye isn't showing any
improvement though, so I'm a little worried about that. Hoping
that eye heals up otherwise he will be at a disadvantage in the
tank. Poor guy, he was show quality even at 2 1/3 inches when I
got him :/
Thanks for the help guys! I'll keep you posted

like said: if he is alive, there is a chance..... best thing to
do is get him into a safe situation. next step is to leave him
be an do nothing at first. he will be in shock and trying to
get anything will just pester and stress, ao turn the lights off
and let him rest.... when he is ready to be active, he will
decide to come out and say hi, theyt;s when you feed. you gwt
little more then 1mm of regrowth a week. when and if you
introduce him to the tank, remove LL DEco or anything that can
be claimed as territiry and turn the lights off, or remove the
other fish for a couple hours to a bucket. it works.
