How many Cichlids at a time?
By: AlexS Date: November 11, 2014, 4:04 pm

Hey guys, so I have been watching a lot of videos in last couple
of days I am currently waiting on my tank to cycle I added some
tetras after the first week to help speed things a lot a bit. I
have a 65 gallon that wanting to do Peacocks and haps. My
question is from watching the videos John talks about making
sure you have plenty of cichlids in your tank to keep them from
being to aggressive, but I have also read that you do not want
to add too many fish at one time to avoid spiking my ammonia and
nitrites too much. My question is how many fish should I put in
a a time with that in mind?
Thanks

I started with 3 small africans in my 55 gallon. A week later I
added 8 more and everything was fine for a week. Then I lost 3
while we were out of town for 4 days. I don't know if it was
aggression, I had an Ehiem feeder set for one feeding a day but
it may have been an ammonia spike, everything tested good after
I did a water change and got the dead fish out (first). Later I
added 5 fish, no problems. So I would suggest adding 4 or 5 at a
time. I would not add only one as it may get picked on too much

I would like the previous post mentioned stick to 4-5 at a time
as well. After adding them test your water to make sure you
don't have an ammonia spike and be diligent on your water
changes when needed.

did it every other week in the begining to let the tank adjust
for the new bio load. and all my fish did really well.

if you find yourself with a single fish, you have a couple
methods...... most of all lights off and well feeding, but you
can pull the rest and add them back an hour or 2 after the new
fish, or remove all decor and add later. they 99% do go in list
mode with nothing to own"... so you have the distract methods,
the still methods, and open area "chill" mode. i have video
proving the open space kills long-standing aggression in my
experience....

I have a newer 55 gallon and thought I'd weigh in with my
experience in order to help the next guy.
My first batch was 5 fish and everything was peaceful, but
boring. 5 small mbuna
My second batch got me to 10 and they weren't the happiest. 5
larger peacocks Lots of tension, two fish were very stress a
strawberry peacock and OB peacock. One mbuna died(crush by a
badly placed tile. my fault or a very clever murder.) I
immediately removed all tiles and re-strategized my decoration
plan.
My third batch got me to 13 and everything was lively and fun.
One frontosa, One Duboisi, One Misc Peacock and a Snow white
Mbuna. The Strawberry became meek yet energetic. The OB seems
like an out cast and chase others away.
My Latest addition was a Venustas, a VC10, and a relatively
large Electric Blue Johanni. I added them last night the
Johanni was a terror(wish I bought a smaller one), but my
strawberry became happy and my OB is still in the corner. All
other fish are doing well and happy. rethinking the Johanni
though.
