Bizarre Egg Shaped substance on driftwood?
By: HWilson Date: October 18, 2014, 5:46 pm

So there's this really odd looking substance on my driftwood
that showed up overnight in my 300 gallon African tank.. It
looks just like a fish egg and is a white-tan color, and it's
stuck onto the driftwood. Anyone have any clue what it is? I
can't imagine that these are eggs since all the fish are
mouth-brooders, but I could be wrong.
If it's a fungus, how do I treat it without removing the
driftwood from the tank? I can't remove the driftwood because
the piece is massive and extremely heavy.
I can't get in close enough for a picture because they're a bit
too small, unfortunately.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

I would try to use my syphon and vacuum it off

My eartheaters are mouth brooders and they initially lay their
eggs on driftwood / rocks for several days before picking them
up to mouth brood. Maybe some Africans do this too?

Sometimes expecting mamas can accidentally drop an egg from
their mouth while they're rearranging them. Or she can
intentionally spit one out because she feels it is a dead egg.
I wouldn't panic, especially if it was only one. If it was
thousands I'd be saying hmmmmmmm but just one, no big deal ::)

Well, it bloomed a bit into many, so I assume it was a fungus.
Shortly after, the fish ate them up. At least it's gone now
since it didn't look all that pretty.
