       To sump or not?
By: pelphrey Date: October 16, 2014, 2:23 pm

       I just setup a 75 gallon mbuna tank. I have a fluval 306
canister currently on the tank and a DIY filter in the tank to
help out. I do have a 30 gallon sump made already for another
tank I have that is not setup. I've been reading about the
eshopps pf-800 and the eshopps pf-1000 HOB overflows and read
great things. I have a brand new RIO 17HF so if I went with the
sump and HOB overflow I was thinking the pf-1000? Wanted
suggestions if I should do the HOB overflow and sump or buy a
       fx5 or fx6 instead? Thanks!

I think it all depends on the size of the other tank your
setting up. Is it bigger or smaller than the 75 gallon you have
right now? It looks like you may have about 15/16 mbuna in
there? Definitely not overstocked so the 306 plus diy filter may
cut it. And then you can just buy a fx6 for your other aquarium
if its larger and add the sump to whichever tank is gonna be
more heavily stocked. But yeah, it all depends on the size of
the other tank and whats going in it. Hope this helps.

I have about 23 mbuna in the tank. The 30 gallon sump above was
originally going to go with a 90 gallon drilled tank I own. The
90 will be sold eventually. I am 50/50 on a bigger canister for
the 75 or the sump. I have nearly everything except the return
lines to add a sump and the HOB overflow. The main reason I want
a sump is because eventually I could plant part of it.
The original plan was to setup the 90 with the sump. I had a 55
where the 75 is now. The 55 has been moved and will eventually
be a fry grow out tank. The plan was to put as much media in the
sump as possible then use the 306 on the 55 grow out tank. Then
the 75 came along and I will be getting rid of the 90 and stand.
       Either way will work honestly.

I would go with the sump. I love the planted sump idea. Plus
you're selling your 90 and have almost everything for the sump
setup. I think sumps are way easier to maintain then a canister
       filter. By far.

there you go. just follow the original plan. move the 306 to the
55 grow out and use the 30 gal sump on the 75

What are your opinions on the eshopps pf-800 overflow (maximum
flow rate of 800gph) using the RIO 17HF return pump ( 840 gph at
4 foot). I don't want to create a wave pool but I want to get
the max turn over rate. I also don't want to put a ball valve on
the return line. And if I've been reading correctly the more
flow you have the better the siphon will be in the overflow box?
Thanks for all the input so far!

You really don't want to make the return pump that close to the
same specs as the overflow, you want more pump up than flow down
to avoid a flooded floor. Also, if one is needed, you put the
ball valve in the return line to limit total flow (again to
       avoid a flooded floor)
