       Water Changes?
By: TexMex Date: October 12, 2014, 2:46 pm

So I am just trying to see what people do when they do a water
change. I have a 120g hap and peacock and 75g mbuna tank, I do a
50% water change twice a week on both tanks. My question is what
do you guys put in the tank when you do a water change? I put
Seachem products like Prime, Stability, and Cichlid Trace. I
also put API Stress Coat Plus and Aquarium Salt. Any feed back
       would be great!
       Thanks guys,

I primarily keep livebearing fish. And the occasional random
       betta.
I try to spread my water changes out during the week and do
more, but smaller changes. But, I have times so I can. So I do
       about a 25-30% twice a week and occasionally will do a 50%
change. Depends on my water test and what they are looking
       like.
I use Seachem Prime. And that's it. I don't dose aquarium salt
in tanks as a standard because if your tank gets sick, what do
you do? Most my tanks are planted so doubling up on salt isn't
good for the plants. My tap water would be perfect for
Africans, high pH, pretty hard, it's got a lot of the right
trace minerals, and it's also good for my livebearers. So I
don't worry about trace minerals. For my fish or plants.
I tend to be of the school of "less is more." The less you're
messing with what comes out of your tap, the more stable your
fishes environment will be. Because the water parameters will
pretty much always be the same.
I do run a phosphate remover in my tanks though. I'm one of
those lucky people that has phosphates in their tap water. I'll
grow some lovely brown algae if I don't remove it.

I just do 25-30% water change weekly and as I don't use gravel
in my two tanks my filters do the rest like removing fish wastes
       just simple as that ;D

I do not really add anything to mine other than dechlorinator
and a weekly dose of liquid plant fertiliser. I usually try to
do 2 water changes a week of 20 - 30%, one of which will include
       a vacuuming of the substrate.

I had a 40G and did 1 water change every year, yes once a year!
I had an under gravel filter w/ 2 power heads, a UV sterilizer
and a Fluval 403, and my fish never died, in fact my Yellow Labs
       were always having fry.
I only had 8 Cichlids in that tank.
I feed my Cichlids every other day, yes 3-4 time a week.
Don’t overfeed your fish and you’ll reduce your water changes.
Don’t over stock, and you’ll reduce your water changes.
Have a larger filter than the minimum, in fact, buy the best
filter you can afford, and you’ll reduce your water changes.
I currently add prime when I do my changes on the 120G.
For my 120G, I have 40G trash bin that I put them water into,
then pump it into the tank. When the water is in the bucket I
add the prime and let it sit for a few before it goes into the
       tank.

       Paul B,
'When you say you changed water once a year in your 40 and your
fish didnt die then its no surprise cause most of the
fishkeepers in my country do that and their fish dont die too :D
       :D :D
But IMO if you dont change water as often or routinely then it
will stun the growth rate of the fish ;)
Its my experience though cause I used to do that at the
beginning of the hobby too ;D ;D

The products that I currently use for my tanks..API stress
zyme-this helps add beneficial bacteria to your tank to keep
sludge build up from happening and also adds slime coat for your
fish. The API is for weekly maintenance. I also use Prime- when
adding new water to my tanks. The prime is very concentrated and
you don't have to use large amounts to get the job done. As far
as water changes go I do a 30 percent change every week. I also
save a bucket of tank water to clean my filters in and viola
       maintenance complete.

Once a week I siphon the gravel and drain half the tank. My
special trick is to leave the siphon out running in the tank as
I fill it with a python. The python fills at about twice the
rate that the siphon drains, so the tank fills back up slowly...
All the while the siphon continues to pull a combination of old
water and new from the tank. I have found that after this
process my nitrates drop to basically zero.

very interesting. im curious as to the time you dose the tank
with prime or whatever you use. Do you just dose after the tank
is filled? Because i assume if you dose while the tank is
filling, the prime can also be siphoned out at the same time.
