       New Fish/Quarantine

       Hello Tank Talkers! ;D
I've heard a few different answers to the question of how long
you should quarantine a new fish before adding it to your
       established tank.
How long do you guys like to keep that fish separate and observe
to ensure no diseases before adding him/her to your established
tank, or do you not wait at all? :P
       Thanks for your help! :D

I personally don't. I think if you are buying from a reputable
dealer the fish should be healthy. FYI- If you buy fish online
and have them shipped they might be a little sluggish at first.
Most places will sedate them a little to keep them from getting
       stressed during shipping.

in the instructions John includes with your fish order, there's
nothing about quarantine, I have never quarantined any new fish

Oh ok! Yeah, I had never quarantined fish before adding them
into my aquarium, but then I was reading somewhere saying that
new fish should be quarantined to assure they do not have any
diseases that will be added into your established tank. They
even recommended quarantining the new fish for 4 weeks to assure
they did not have Ich (I guess Ich can lie dormant for 4 weeks
       before the fish shows signs).
Thanks for your input! Fisher-of-Men! :)

Now see, I always quarantine. Even the best fish
keepers/breeders can have issues. And stress makes fish
susceptible to things like ich. Being moved from one tank to
another can cause stress. Being shipped certain can cause
       stress.
That said, I typically use a salt dip or now I use hydroplex,
great stuff, when I get new fish and then put them in their own
tank for at least a week. Ich is the biggest problem I've seen
over the years and it becomes obvious within the first few days
if they have it. With it's life cycle, it would show up in the
first week if it was there.
BUT, I also often have several tanks all connected to the same
sump, so .. I have to be really careful or several of my tanks
can all get sick at once.

I've heard of the salt dip method, but I'm not exactly sure how
that is done. How do you do yours?
I'm currently trying out the quarantine method to ensure that my
new fish doesn't have any sort of disease (I found him through
Craigslist ;)), as well as reduce the stress as you have said!
       I appreciate your input! ;D

I have never quarantined any of mine mainly due to lack of space
but I can definitely see why people do it. I get around it to an
extent by checking up on the fish I intend to buy a couple of
times in the month leading up to buying them. It is no guarantee
by any means but at least if they have been ok up to that point
and do come down with something you know it will have been a
very recent occurrence possibly triggered by the stress of being
bagged etc... Should make it, in theory anyway, relatively easy
       to treat.
If you can accommodate it though, a quarantine tank would be a
       far better option.

That's a smart idea to check on the fish you are interested in a
couple times before you buy him/her. I always have this fear
that if I leave, I'll come back and it will be sold! :'( Haha.
Thanks so much for your input Stu!

This is one of those AWESOME and fun debates that will be around
for as long as we are keeping fish in glass boxes lol.
Personally I don't quarantine new fish, I never have (doesn't
mean you shouldn't), I've always felt that it is overkill unless
you are bringing in wild caught fish and even those are usually
quarantined at the importers facility. I am a believer in that
if you trust your supplier you should be fine, having said that
though we are always preparing for our next disaster as fish
keepers so playing it safe and quarantining them for a little
bit is never a bad thing, I just don't do it lol.
If you have the tank space and the patience then quarantine
them. How long?? Until you feel comfortable with them entering
into the tank where you have your prize fish, how long does that
       take? Who knows.....
