Re: what to breed as feeders

I know a lot of people who would argue that feeding a raw bone
type diet to your dog is the ONLY proper way to feed a dog. I
don't happen to buy into that, but doing all the dog sports and
things I do, I'm forever surrounded by dog feeding opinions,
very strong ones. I feed my dogs a kibble that doesn't make
them have smelly gas. Seriously, that's my bottom line. Their
staple diet is kibble. But, if they catch a mouse or a bird or
whatever, so be it. And all my dogs have been little hunters.
Especially my Doberman. She'd catch field mice and squirrels.
The two little ones I have now are more bug and mouse hunters
than anything else. And mostly bugs.
So anyway, I don't understand the aversion to feeding live fish
to fish. At the end of it, I think it's truly one of those
things with both dogs and fish where the arguments on both sides
are more emotional than logical anyway. I feed my fish a lot of
live foods, not so much because I think they NEED it, but more
because I like to culture live foods. Most of the fish I have
aren't fish eaters though, so I culture a lot of not fish
things.
The rule of thumb I use before I start culturing anything for
live food is to make sure that the fish I plan to feed the live
food can eat the adult version of whatever I'm culturing (or
that I have fish that can eat the adult versions). That becomes
important if you don't want to be over run by the adult version
of the food. Unless, the adult version of the food is something
you can easily sell, trade or give away. For example, I don't
think a needle nose gar would be able to eat an adult convict.
And, believe me, you do not want to have a bunch of adult
convicts left over. They're difficult to get rid of. Sometimes
you can't even give them away. So you might want to pick
something smaller.
You also want to understand the fish's natural behavior. Needle
nose gars are lightening fast fish hunters. So having faster
food isn't a big deal. If you had a big Oscar, I'd suggest a
slower moving fish, like a guppy or something. Something the
Oscar can catch without causing too much destruction in your
tank.
John might hate me now. I feed my fish live stuff and I let my
dogs hunt. I'm terrible, terrible!!!

lol, well my outlook is very different from a lot of people's,
and I know it. I was raised in ranch country. Everything you
raise there is either food or for managing food. (Horses, dogs
.. they have a job.) So when people get all squiggy about
things, I don't quite grasp lol!

I always believed the saying "Don't name it if your going to eat
it".

I am in your favor john but garr don't eat pellet and if
skipping fish , you should feed him meat of another animal
[/quote]
That's not even close to being true, that's just what others
have said. I've had multiple Gar from Florida to Alligator and
had all of them on pellets. You just have to be patient and
realize that when the fish is hungry enough it will eat
anything.
Anyone that tells you that there are fish out there that wont
except anything but live food is lying to your face! Sorry if I
sound mean here but this is kindof a touchy subject for me.

Ha ha don't be silly, I'd NEVER hate someone just because we
look at things differently. There is certainly a difference
between live foods that are cultured by us or live foods grown
in a farm. You don't wana know the kind of things that go on at
those farms.
My whole argument is why feed them live foods at all?
You want it to be more like their natural habitat? Well that's
weird to say when this whole hobby centers around keeping fish
in glass boxes.
You want them to maintain their instinct to hunt? Again......
why? They're still in a glass box, why should they need to know
how to hunt?
I'm not against live foods because its cruel to the little
feeder fish, I'm against it because the food that is made
available off the shelf is so much better for them then anything
they can get from some silly worm, bug or god forbid comet
goldfish.
But that's just me ::) :o :-*

I became too patient John that I killed my two garrs thinking
they will be hungry to feed on pellets :(
Although I am against feeding live foods to fishes I can't do
anything when they want live foods but in substitute I fed my
other garr Cockroaches ;Dheard they are rich in proteins and
they are eventually killed even if I leave them alone in my
house cause they will be killed by insecticides ;D
I have already mentioned that nature of fishes may be different
Some fishes are just picky that you can't do anything
But I have found people who have luck with bloodworms and they
feed pellets with bloodworms, heard garr ate pellets if done
like that
And I dont think that young garrs can be kept hungry thinking
they will feed eventually on pellets John , it just didn't work
for me and what I am sharing is just my experience :)

And John I was talking about young garr there ;)
I have read in different forums that you can make your adult
garrs feed on pellets though
