The case of the "missing" P. Saulosi male

I had a funny moment this week when I was counting my Saulosi
and was missing one of the males who was starting to turn from
deep yellow to light yellow. The other two light colored fish
were there but I could not find the other one. All of the
females were there. I also have white top Hara and I noticed
that I now had 3 males instead of 2 males. After drinking my
coffee and watching them for a while, I realized that the "new"
male Hara was actually the allegedly missing male Saulosi who
was chasing the other two males around the tank in adult
coloration. So, there was no missing fish it was just the male
had completely changed from light yellow with dark stripes to
blueish with dark stripes. Never a dull moment with these ACs.

Both sexes of the Saulosi cichlids are born yellow only the
males become blue when they get sexually mature

Yes, that is true. I knew that but I was not prepared for the
speed of the metamorphosis. One of the reasons I chose the P.
Saulosi was that the females are a beautiful yellow and the
males have a lovely dark blue color. Almost like two different
types of fish. It helps that they are dwarf mbuna since I have
       a 55 gallon tank.
