Arowana a cautionary tale

Well I have some terrible news. I awoke this morning and went
to turn on the light on my 165. I'm looking in the tank
checking the fish out like I do every morning. I cant find my
arowana and yes he sis what you always here the do. He jumped
out of the tank and I found him dead on the floor behind the
tank. I only have a 2-3 inch gap in the back for my filter and
what not. He had to hit the gap just perfect for him to make it
out of the tank. He was about 10 inches long and was my
favorite fish in the tank. So I you have or are thinking of
getting one of these amazing fish make sure your tank is 100%
covered even a small gap is big enough for a disaster to happen.

Sorry to hear of your loss, it's strange how such a big fish can
manage to force his way through such a small gap.

Wow, really sorry Jeremiahsfish for your loss.
I have to wonder what in the middle of the night spooked him to
jump from the tank.

I so sorry to hear about your loss. It's always sad when you
lose an animal, and especially from something like this.
One of the things I started doing a while ago was dropping my
water level by a few inches. I've found that with fish that do
tend to like to escape, it makes it that much harder for them to
slide out.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words. On a more happy note I
finally got my reticulated stingray today. Hes very awesome.
Still he wouldve went in great with the arowana but he will
enjoy the tank without on for now. If/when I get another
arowana I think I will lower the water level as it is impossible
to completely close off the top.

Years ago I had a large Arowana in a 150 gallon tank. I knew
they can jump so I constructed the tank with a glass top and
hinged glass openings measuring about 12" x 16". The hinged
covers were 1/4" plate and were fairly heavy.
One day I returned home from work to find my Arowana on the
carpet. He jumped with such force, it opened one of the 1/4"
plate covers allowing him to escape. He had been on the carpet
quite a while because he was nearly dry to the touch. He
appeared to be dead but I threw him back in the tank anyway.
Within a few minutes I could see his gills slowly moving. By
the next day he had fully recovered. But......... because he
had dried out, his slime coating picked up a lot of carpet fuzz.
It took nearly a week for him to shed all the fuzz from his
scales.
After that, his nickname was "Fuzzy". (and after that, the 1/4"
thick plate glass covers had latches)

@ Scott, that was one very lucky and also very tough fish. I am
guessing he has not tried it since.

Sorry to hear about that, unfortunately I too have been in your
shoes (several times). As far as the "little gap" goes you're
exactly right! It almost seems like they seek out that little
crack and make their escape.
I've told this story many times but it's similar to Scotts
story. 1/4" glass on my 240 gallon AND I put standard bricks on
top of the lids and my 30 incher busted right through and ended
up on the floor. Unfortunately mine didn't have a happy ending
like Scotts, I was to late >:( and it was fathers day morning
which makes it worse :'( :'(
Lesson learned for anyone, seal the tank like Fort Knox if
you're gonna keep Arowanas. I can say this without even thinking
about it though, in my opinion there is not a cooler aquarium
fish!!!
