Do you have to be a James Bond Super Villain to own a Red Tail
Catfish?

Maybe not in terms of having plans to take over the world, you
might have but we do not need to go into that here, but in terms
of the money needed to construct something of adequate size that
one of these monster cats could actually live in some degree of
comfort as an adult. Although it probably would be pretty cool
to have a sliding floor with some of these swimming underneath
it.
Going by the fact these fish get to be anything from 1.5m to
1.8m (5 - 6 foot roughly) that is some serious tank dimensions
that are going to be needed to accommodate one when he / she is
fully grown. Anything short of 8m long (26 foot) and 3m wide (10
foot) would probably still be too restrictive to allow for any
moderately active swimming, even then it still would not be
ideal. Of course you may be lucky enough to live somewhere you
could keep one in an outdoor pond, would not want to be a gull
or a duck that lands on that pond, which is a slightly less
expensive proposition but not one that would work for me in N
Ireland where it tends to get a bit chilly.
Think I may have to wait until someone finally finds a mini
version in some as yet undiscovered tributary of the Amazon. We
can but hope.

yeah lets just hope for its mini version to be discovered ;D
that's the only way to keep him with us in our tank
My friend bought one of these and it doubled its size in a month
So I stayed away from this fish although it was in lfs and
looking innocent with juvenile body

There's a pretty big LFS here in Phx that has a 1200 gallon (I
think it's 96x48x60) show tank when you first enter, for the
longest time it was the home of "Franky" the red-tailed
catfish...He was the only fish in there...aaannnd he OUT GREW
IT! 1200 gallons!?! One of our local zoo's opened up a "River
Monsters" aquarium exhibit (inspired by the show). The LFS
donated Frank to them, and now he's even bigger, and shares a
33,000 gallon Amazon river display with Arowana, Arapaima,
Payara, and a bunch of other monsters....it's a really cool
tank/exhibit...
So I guess, yeah, being a Bond villain (gotta put laser beams on
their heads then) or a zoo is probably the best way to keep
them...

That would be a very cool exhibit to see, hopefully Franky will
behave himself in there.

You wouldn't know if the zoo your talking about has a website

I LOVE red tailed catfish! I love them, I love them, I love
them, I love them!!
I think you need a pond to own them though. They get MASSIVE.
So you might need to be like, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and have
big muscles to ensure that you can move your fish if you need
to. I really, really would like to raise one from fingerling to
pond worthy someday. But, I'll have to get a pond first.

Big Arnie would be alright, he could probably dig a pond with a
few hand grenades and have a helicopter gunship on standby to
airlift it in.

Thanks Tim!
Found a quick 50 second video of 'Frankie' that appears to have
been shot in the actual store before he was moved to the zoo.
Amazing fish!
