       Crystal Clear Water!!
By: TexMex Date: September 26, 2014, 7:11 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
So I just set up a new 120 gallon tanks which I transferred my
25 Haps/Peacocks to, it is about 5 weeks old and I have a
problem with clear water it is very cloudy. All my other tanks
are crystal clear, I got this tank load up with equip to try to
remove it, I have a new Fluval FX6 with multiple layers of
filter floss, 2 Sun Sun Canister filters with 9 watt UV
Sterilizer with my matured filter media with 2 Chem Pure Blue
bags and filter floss, A 24w UV sterilizer (Green Cleaning
Machine), I have a Aqueon 90 gal overhang filter with of ceramic
rings and topped with filter floss. As you can see I have pulled
all the stops, this is the first tank that I ever used sand
(Pool Filter Sand). I thinking this is why??? Any adviser would
       very helpful.
       Thanks,

The sand should have settle within a few days, weird. I wonder
if with all that filtration it's actually blowing the sand
around? How do you have your outputs pointed? Dumb question
also, how well did you rinse the sand? Is pool filter sand
(PFS), or play sand (PS)? The PS has a tendency to take a bit
       more rinsing...

The outputs are facing up, but I have some powerheads points
parallel to the sand to blow all the crap towards the FX6. The
sand I think was rinsed good enough, and if I didn't what is the
best solution to fix that, do I just wait a while for it to
       clear up?

You could have a bacteria/algae bloom also that's clouding the
water...just reread that you have a new tank...

That's what I was thinking but it was my first time using sand.
Figured the UV's would have taken care of that.

They can, just depends on the rate of flow past the light
       itself...

water parameters? your BB could have been killed off during the
change and the tanks trying to cycle again. your filters
shouldnt be on when filling the tank if the water has not been
treated yet. if the tanks trying to cycle again this may be the
       cause. but post you numbers

I have experienced it too it happens sometimes and whatever you
do either water changes or cleaning the tank cloudy water won't
       be clear
I think it happens at the time when tank is cycling yours may be
       cycling
Mine water became clear after 1 or 2 weeks I think
       Hope it helps

Check your parameters as others have said it do sound more like
your tank is cycling probably due to a huge bio-load added all
at once. Start doing 40% - 50% water changes daily but keep
testing the water or if you use chemicals in your tank go get
yourself a bottle of Seachem Stability.

I've never had a sanded tank that looked crystal clear in the
beginning. And by the beginning, I mean the first couple of
months at least. Yea, it settles out and gets better, then
you'll do a water change or move something and *poof* it's not
clear anymore. How cloudy and how fast the sand resettles gets
a little bit better all the time, but it takes time.
I think that's due to the new sand not having a good coating of
biofilm on it. As the bacteria in your tank establishes itself,
it gets into the sand and some is alive, some is dead and it
creates that biofilm around your sand and helps the sand stay
       settled.
