       Need heater recommendation.

I'm in the process of building a 150 gal. tank. It will be for
haps and peacocks. What type, size and number of heaters would
you recommend for this size tank. Thanks

       2 300 watt heaters will usually handle a 150 gallon. I've done
it ::) I'll have heaters listed on the website soon if you want
to get them through our Amazon links :P :P

Hey John, is there a particular brand you prefer. We don't know
much about the aquarium products, just trying to get quality
gear for this setup. Thanks for the help.

Jager, Fluval, and Cobalt Aquatics are all good brands... The
rule of thumb is 4W per gallon. I always install two heaters
that are EACH able to handle my tank on their own (in case one
fails). I set one at 82 degrees and the other at 80 degrees.
So 95% of the time only one is running. The second only kicks
on if the primary dies and the temperature falls by two degrees.
Following the 4W per gallon rule, I would have a 600W primary
and a 600W backup on my tank.
       But that's just me...

This does make sense. Thanks for the advice.

I am a fan of the Hydor inline heater. You have to use it with a
canister filter though. I have one 300w heater running on my 125
gallon tank and have had no issues with it. The temp stays
pretty accurate even though this heater is rated for far fewer
gallons. I just prefer the lack of clutter in the tank and it
also seems like it would disperse the heat better since it is
flowing through the filter, and hence the entire tank, as
opposed to having hot spots with conventional heaters.

       Ugh, tank heaters!
I've gone through a lot of tank heaters in my life and the one
thing I have to say on the subject is .. have a few spare
heaters around!! I have as of yet to find any one brand that
lasts for a very long time with no issues. To me, they are one
of those things you just have to replace every now and then.

I second fluval's as a good product. I personally am rather
impressed with their smart-heater line. I didn't really expect
much about them and figured the smart-heater thing was just
hype(something flashy and fancy to get people's attention). It
comes already in a thick casing to protect from falls or fish
burning themselves. This is useful if you expect to have fish
that are big and may mess around and redecorate your tank. So
far it's the only brand that hasn't give me problems down the
road with over-heating or straight up failure after a few
months. I have come to appreciate it's led color change thing as
a quick indicator of what currently is going on (Green when tank
is in range, red when the tank is running too hot, and blue when
running too cold). It also lets you know when there is not
enough flow going through the heater, and has a number
       indicator. It's usually fairly accurate.

+1 for a hydor inline if you're using canisters. had mine
running for 4 years now and it's been a rock at 78. If you want
to use a standard heater, all the ones John listed are really
good as is the aqueon pro heaters. I use those in my other tanks
and they've been spot on also.
