yeah that guy has loads of info. Most definitely on the
extremely safe side of fishkeeping but backs up everything he
does with valid/credible info.

I'll have to go watch that guy, sounds interesting.
I like the idea of a baseline, but I don't like the idea of
waiting a week for water tests to establish a baseline. Some
tanks can go from 10ppm to 60ppm in a day or two. The only way
to know is ... daily testing.
Now, I am not superwoman so my tanks don't get tested daily,
but when you've got a newer tank or when you've just added new
stock to existing stock, or I guess I should say when I have
these things, I test more often.
I need to go see what that guy has to say about nitrates. I
tried to watch him the other day - and I had a hard time with
his monotone. :-\ But I'll give it another go lol!

Nitrates should be weekly:-
As low as possible however changing your water everytime it
reaches 5ppm although does well is not needed. You should change
the water weekly percentage depends on bio-load and nitrates
should be fine if reaching 20ppm per week (before water change).
You might want to test the water parameters coming out of your
tap, as my friend in the UK has 30-40 ppm of nitrates coming out
of his tap.

As far as that guy is concerned - the phrase that comes to my
mind is: if you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them
with bullshit.
I don't even want to waste my time pointing out where the holes
are with this one. The most I'll say about it is that, there is
theory and there is real life. And everyone who has ever taken
even the most basic chemistry class knows that difference can be
massive. Except for this clown. He apparently think keeping
aquariums is a mathematical equation. Sorry but no. He over
simplifies things that need more attention and he over
complicates the simple things.
And he's probably going to be responsible for a lot of people
killing their fish by convincing them not to do the water
changes they need to do.

lol thats why I try to take the main idea he has and go with
that. Cybers on the far end of the spectrum of overanalyzing and
safety. I can tell from your posts that you probably have more
knowledge/experience that 99 percent of the people on here.
Cybers a very hard listen because of his monotone voice and as
you explained, his way of making easy things seem hard. But I
feel, underneath it all, he has good ideas. From the nitrate
videos, the main idea i took from there was having a baseline
for nitrates. All the unnecessary things i threw out the door.

i agree you dont need wait a week to create a base line ive
basically have one now i did water change and waited 2 days
tested water to get an idea of my rate of nitrates he had really
good ideas. like he said think outside the box

Well, I do have a couple of degrees specifically in freshwater
biology. Which, doesn't make me an expert on aquariums, there
are people out there with no degree that are way more
knowledgeable than I am, but I've been in the hobby for a long
time too. So I do like to think I know what I'm talking about.
I also keep my trap shut, or say outright when I don't really
know something and I'm just guessing. Reef tanks, I don't have
a clue, and so I won't talk about them lol!
But personally, I think it's flat out irresponsible.
To me, that's just common sense that you'd be better off testing
more often. You don't have to do water changes every time you
test. So test. Know what's going on in your tank. All this
math stuff - the problem with that is that people watch, hear
his fancy math calculations and think "wow, he must know what
he's talking about." And then they spread that iffy advice and
warp it round. It's just .. bad if you ask me.
