       Just like to add, if your tank is near direct sunlight then that
       may be a factor also.

       I don't know why you took the rocks out, they are part of your
       biological filtration system.  If it's truly diatom algae, the
       brown stuff should fluff right off.  You don't need to scrub
       your rocks.  And probably shouldn't.  You'll just kill the good
       bacteria that's already starting to build.

       I tried the fluffing approach, and it wasn't working. I realized
       I would lose some of the beneficial bacteria, so I added
       additional bacteria to the tank. Now the algae is gone and I've
       also noticed my fish are much less aggressive without all those
       places to hide. I'm debating on putting the rocks back in at
       this point. I might go in a different direction with the
       aquascape and simply go with a 3D background. Thanks again for
       all the good advice.

       Lol, John would like to hear the lower aggression with the rocks
       gone.  That's the method he uses to keep the peace in his tanks.
