The phase of relative unification around the “worker” referent
has given way to an inverse phenomenon of fragmentation of
dominated groups. As announced in the Manifesto of the Communist
Partyin 1848, capitalism has become universal; but it was not
simplified when globalized. If the polarity produced by the
unequal distribution of resources continues to be the rule, it
crosses all territories, all societies and all the groups that
compose them.

and an elite. The social "bloc",
bourgeois or popular, is a myth. Social movements orphaned by
politics For its part, social hope was shaken by the tragic
upheavals of the twentieth century.. Political communism has
suffered from the stagnation of a Soviet, voluntarist and
statist model, which for too long constituted an important basis
of identification. The dissidents of the communist movement,
locked in the illusory memories of Russian Bolshevism, have
never been able to emerge from marginality.

Third worldism, caught in the networks of neocolonialism and
its substitutes, has not produced an alternative emancipatory
model. As for European socialism, which for a long time drew
strength from the Welfare State, it failed to relaunch itself in
a sustainable way after the collapse of the post-1945 balances
of power. In short, the left has not been able to reformulate
the symbolic base that sustained it. for at least a century.
Regarding the labor movement, which in May-June 1968 reached its
peak at the same time as its swan song, never stopped
vacillating between renunciation and nostalgia.
