"Y-You....You can't possibly know that..." Altara looked down,
holding back tears

"I'm sorry, Princess. But I do." Armani murmured, wincing at the
pain in Altara's voice. If he could save the king as well, he
would, but at the moment even miracles hadn't been enough to
save anyone. He had to make this cycle count!

".....Armani. Show me proof" Altara answered after a moment of
silence.
"Something I know you cant forge or fake!"

"Proof of the king's health, or proof that Malkos will try to
usurp you tomorrow if you aren't Queen today?" Armani asked,
heart sinking. Either would be immensely difficult to obtain,
even if Altara wanted to believe him.

"Either. Both! Anything!!" Altara demanded, tears now down her
face.

"...It's a fair thing to ask." Armani said, trying not to look
crestfallen. His watch had been his greatest proof, but if that
wasn't enough...
"He's not lying about Malkos."
Claudia and Armani whirled in alarm at the voice from nowhere,
but Floriana faded in slowly as her invisibility was dismissed.
The court mage seemed exhausted to Claudia, as though she'd just
come to the end of some horrible ordeal.
"I don't have a signed confession, if that's what you're hoping
for, but...the boy is right. If the king passes today, Malkos
will be king before breakfast tomorrow."

"!" Altara's jaw almost dropped.
"T-Teacher?! What are you doing here?"

"Were you spying on the princess?" Claudia growled, hand on her
sword.
"Easy, Fido. If I meant Altara any harm all of you would be
frogs right now," Floriana sighed, waving a hand. "I was keeping
an eye on her and out of Malkos's way. If you're all not afraid
of him, you should be."

"Because he approached me not so long ago and told me." Floriana
said, not letting herself hesitate.
"He couldn't ask me to keep out of the way of his plans without
telling me a bit about what they were."
"Then you were conspiring with him?" Claudia asked, aghast.
"Well, not if Malkos is presumed innocent," Floriana said.
Despite her nonchalant shrug and her normal needling of Claudia,
Floriana had a distressed air about her she'd never had when
teaching Altara.
